LONDON -- Marianne Faithfull has postponed a world tour after being diagnosed with breast cancer, her London publicist said Thursday.
Doctors in France, where Faithfull was diagnosed, say the cancer is in its earliest stages, said publicist Rob Partridge.
Faithfull, 59, had been due to begin a world tour next month, but it has been postponed until next year.
"I have absolute faith and confidence in my fantastic medical team and of course I will be well again, if not better than ever," the British singer-actress said in a statement released by Partridge.
"Next year's tour, I want to assure fans, will be one big celebration."
Partridge said the cancer had been "quickly discovered by doctors in France -- where Marianne stays when not at home in Ireland -- and the prognosis for a return to full health is excellent.
"Indeed, Marianne Faithfull is looking forward to playing the rescheduled tour in 2007," he said.
The tour had been due to kick off in Paris on Oct. 7, with concerts in the United States, Canada, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Hungary and Spain before ending in London on Dec. 18.
Faithfull gained fame in the 1960s as the girlfriend of Mick Jagger and as the pure-voiced singer of "As Tears Go By." After battling drug addiction, she re-emerged in 1979 with the raw album "Broken English" and has since found a new audience as a sophisticated chanteuse.

I didn't even get a cab ride when I went there (at the age of 41). We just rode the Metro.
The later version of "As Tears Go By." Best wishes to Marianne.

You're thinking of Dusty Springfield. I think she had breast cancer, too.
IIRC, it had something to do the world turning orange and the room started spinning 'round. That would do it for me!
Prayers for a full recovery.
According to Wikipedia she died of it in 1999.
I pray for her complete recovery. Her voice isn't quite as smooth as it used to be, but I've always enjoyed her singing.

Move along staying close to the wall
Looking over your shoulder just in time.
Avoid the light, close your eyes
And put your hand in mine.
And put your hand in mine.
Are we in danger, or is it that
You think we might be
But I think I'd like to get out of here,
This place it frightens me,
This place it frightens me.
Running for our lives,
At least we're pretending we are.
Running for our lives,
We never get very far.
We never get very far.
We never get very far.
Stop pretending
This is a child's adventure,
The only way I can take it
Is playing the game.
Be quiet, there's a gate ahead.
Do you think we can make it
Will it be different, or just the same
How long can we keep escaping,
How long can we keep escaping,
How long can we keep escaping
Into another prison
Running for our lives,
At least we're pretending we are.
Running for our lives,
We never get very far.
We never get very far.
We never get very far.
Move along staying close to the wall,
Looking over your shoulder just in time.
Avoid the light, close your eyes
And put your hand in mine
And put your hand in mine.
Running for our lives,
At least we're pretending we are.
Running for our lives,
We never get very far.
We never get very far.
We never get very far.
We never get very far.
We never get very far.
We never get very far...
Have you ever been a SAHM? Some days, when you've washed the same clothes for the 90th time, cleaned the same dishes, scrubbed the toilets AGAIN, you really do want to "run naked, down the shady streets, screaming all the way"... just for something different to do.
Well, at least we got there!
I had that album almost 25 years ago.I first heard "Why did you do it on the local AOR station. They had to beep out all the cuss words, but you could still tell what she was singing.I went to Rhapsody after reading this thread and gave it a listen for old times sake.I might end up downloading it.
AGAIN, you really do want to "run naked, down the shady streets, screaming all the way"... just for something different to do.
Um...no, I really don't.
Your #15. Thanks! I always loved her singing, too. Prayers for a full recovery.
On the bright side, at least you knew it was French.
I like "Ireland" and "Falling From Grace" from that album.
On one occasion I tried to order something from the menu in a Paris restaurant. I was using my French which I really did take in undergraduate college.
The waiter said, "Please do not crucify our language" and he wasn't very sweet about it.
So, I kinda ordered in english while pointing to the menu, but I guarantee you that I didn't overtip him. It kinda pissed me off.
Never say never. My Franco/Anglophone wife and I are a bit more, um, mature than that, and in a few weeks she's going to see Paris again, for the first time since her childhood.
Believe you me, if she wants to ride through Paris with the (warm?) wind in her hair, I'll rent a sports car and brave Parisian traffic. It can't be worse than New Delhi where you need "good horn, good brakes and good luck!"
And I'll have insurance...
(Tha gaol agamsa ort, a' graidh!)
