Bush: "Texas has lost one of its great daughters"

WASHINGTON President Bush has paid tribute today to Ann Richards, whom he ousted and succeeded as governor in 1995.

The former Democratic governor of Texas died last night at her Austin home after a battle against esophageal cancer. She was 73.

In a statement issued by the White House, the president said he and first lady Laura Bush "are deeply saddened by the passing of Governor Ann Richards of Texas."

He said Richards "loved Texas, and Texans loved her," and that "as a public servant she earned respect and admiration."

The president said Richards "became a national role model, and her charm, wit and candor brought a refreshing vitality to public life."

He concluded that "Texas has lost one of its great daughters."

With all due respect to Mrs. Richards, I don't mean to belittle her passing. But...I am beginning to think that the DNC sacrafices one of their liberal stars each election season to profit politically. Just like they accuse Bush to push national security for political gain.

The difference is that national security is a serious issue, while rememberence love-fest is more about mythical ideology than anything else.

Again, no disrespect to the deceased. It just seems to be a pattern recently.

He will give a respectful and thoughtful response to her death, the Dems will spit in his eye, and the media will conclude he is back-stabbing low-life who made the moment of her death into a political statement. I only pray they turn her funeral into an another Wellstone Nazi Rally. They need to drag out Leni for this one.

I think that if the funeral is held in the South, it won't be "wellstoned". People in the South have more manners and class than people up north. They are much more gracious(In my opinion).

I think it would be great if President Bush spoke but I doubt the family would want that. Would you want someone at your relative's funeral who beat them out of the Governorship? That was probably the worst time in Ann's life.

Politics are dirty. I don't think a heated campaign necessarily sums up the heart and soul of a person.

I prefer the Lombardi Rule, as it sums up politics nicely: Winning isn't everything, it's the ONLY thing.

Undoubtedly! You should have seen the TV ads GWB was running when campaigning for the Governorship. Nary a bad word about Ann Richards and always sticking to the issues.

"They" had no control over her getting cancer and passing within a few months of the diagnosis.

What can you possibly mean, "they" sacrifice one of their liberal stars each election season to profit politically"...

?

The dimboRATs are incapable of engaging in rational discussion about the security of the United States.

I would prefer to think that most in the DNC are reasonable, well-mannered people mainly conservative in their behavior. A few bad apples can taint the organization and embarrass the Party Elders.

Do you suppose Reid and Pelosi will demand the networks give them some time to rebut this statement?

I agree. Certainly contrasts with Turban Durban, the Putz, and the Swimmer over the last few days, doesn't it?

Very nice and kind for a "jerk", don't you think?

(In the 1994 gubernatorial campaign, Ann's campaign slogan was "Beat the Jerk")

More like primary source.

But may God have mercy on her soul. Prayers for her family.

George W. Bush showed a lot of class with this statement.

"President Bush has more class and dignity in his little pinky than all the Democrats in America put together."

Well, I don't know about "all" Democrats. But he certainly has more class and dignity than many, including several of the posters on this thread.
