...However, of all the things those of us who were here five years ago could have forecast -- of all the nightmares that unfolded before our eyes, and the others that unfolded only in our minds -- none of us could have predicted this.
Five years later this space is still empty.
Five years later there is no memorial to the dead.
Five years later there is no building rising to show with proud defiance that we would not have our America wrung from us, by cowards and criminals.
Five years later this country's wound is still open.
Five years later this country's mass grave is still unmarked.
Five years later this is still just a background for a photo-op.
It is beyond shameful....

How is any of this George Bush's fault?

New York city has a robust political environment and New York will decide when they are ready to replace their building. The Federal Government should do exactly what they are doing. Stay out of it.

Suppose the people that own the ground want to have a say in this communistic vision of the government being responsible for all this?

Is the WTC land still privately owned? Incidentally, many wounds never heal, it is just a cliche' for liberals to have an excuse to not feel.

Of course that Mr OberLiar and his political cronies tried to create a rabidly Anti American monument on the site and were forcefully vetoed by the justifiable enraged American people gets NO mention by any of the slavish whores at the Nation or Yahoo who pushed this incompetent liar's tripe.

Hmmm...I don't think Democrats want to open THIS can of worms. It might not look so good for a certain representative from New York.

Keith Olbermann is without a doubt the best news anchor on television today. The author lost me right there. Anything else he says must be strained through the BS filter.

Imagine the howls if W. actually did get involved in some fashion. "He's politicizing the tragedy!"

Olbermann is a jerk for saying that the lack of rebuilding there is Bush's fault. He completely lets off the hook all of the bean counters, the bureaucrats, the local politicians who want to put their chop on it, the professional weepers and mourners who threatened lawsuits if anything other than a memorial was built there, the lawyers who get rich anytime a disaster strikes and tie things up for years in the courts. About the person furthest removed from blame in this whole sordid thing is George Bush, yet this slimeball Olbermann goes out of his way to blame him.
FWIW, it has always been my belief that as soon as that site was cleared of debris immediate rebuilding should have begun, with a bigger and better and safer WTC rising exactly as the old ones stood. The fact that it remains a hole in the ground today is more an indictment of the paralysis of our institutional systems and the endless, mindless delays brought about by petty bickering and self-serving, than anything anyone could remotely hang around Bush's neck.

The fact that Ground Zero remains a whole in the ground is simply an indication of just how soft the market for office space in Lower Manhattan is today. Larry Silverstein is nearing completion of the rebuilt 7 World Trade Center at the north end of the site, and as recently as a few months ago he didn't have a single tenant signed to a long-term lease other than his own company.
If a 52-story office building at the site is 80% vacant or more, you can be sure that no developer with even a modicum of business sense is going to construct 8+ million square feet of office space next door.
I predict that -- due primarily to this issue -- none of the various designs under consideration for the site will ever be built to completion.
