Voters Head to Polls in 9 States, D.C. for Primary Elections (LIVE THREAD)

Notoriously independent-minded Rhode Island Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee confronts stiff opposition Tuesday in his bid for a second term, the latest race with a moderate targeted by his own party's hard-line critics.

While a total of nine states and Washington, D.C., were holding primary elections, Chafee's race is drawing the most attention as another test of the depth of anti-incumbent sentiment and the erosion of the political middle ground.

Update courtesy of RobFromGa in #70:

Here are websites where you can find the results for eight of the nine primaries being held today.  The link for Vermont may not be working just yet.  I believe it should be up and running by this evening.

Gawgeous huge four-color glossy mailings arrived yesterday, with McFarland's picture next to . . . REAGAN'S!!! Where did she get the money for these? I hope they didn't go to everyone. I got three of them. More to the point: She is trying to position herself as the conservative candidate. What noive!

"Vote Early, Vote Often!" Ping!

I was voter 131 @ 9 am this morning. And you? ;)

I voted for JB Van Holen for Attorney General (over Paul Bucher). I voted for Mark Green for Governor, just because. Then I just voted for all other Pubbies on the list.

(In Wisconsin we have to vote a straight party ticket in this primary.)

Polls are open until 8pm, so make your voices heard!

Since most of the elections are decided in the primary in Montgomery County, I am a registered Democrat. I didn't vote on the Senate election though because even though Mfume seems less electable, he could somehow end up being our Senator for the next 30 years.

Thanks for the thread. Polls close here (Rhode Island) at 9pm. The local talk station 630 WPRO will be going live with
election coverage from 9 to midnight. You can listen here http://630wpro.com/. Pretty good conversation with the very excellent Dan Yorke about the stupidity of Rhode Island voters playing as I type this, check it out.

NR is speculating that Chafee may be losing.

We need a huge Mark Kennedy win tonight so that NRSC money and Club for Growth resources will flow to Kennedy.

Klobuchar is a dangerous nut. Perhaps even worse than Dayton, if that's possible.

What is your read on the Kennedy-Klobuchar race? I don't believe the media-peddled 10-point lead for Klobuchar at all.

Rob-

I live in the 5th District and I'm going out to vote after work - in the Democrat primary.

Ellison is ethically challenged and truth be told, I can't vote for a Muslim.

There's not a lot of ideological differences between the four top Dems running. Ellison is perhaps more of a firebrand than the other three.

Cross-over voting is completely legal in Minnesota - and I'm gonna do it. Besides, in the Dem primary, I can vote for other candidates (Governor, etc) who may be easier to beat in November.

If you are going to vote in the RAT primary, please vote against both Hatch and Klobuchar.

Kennedy is running virtually un-opposed in the primary. He'll do fine.

You're right about Klobuchar. I've never seen a Dem run as stealthily as she is.

She's vague on everything as opposed to Kennedy. We know where he stands. Amy is every bit as liberal as Paul Wellstone or Mark Dayton. She does not have a mind of her own and will do whatever Ted Kennedy or Hillary Clinton tell her to do.

I say the race is at 10 points (or slightly less) right now - more than likely due to Klobuchar's name ID.

I hope it starts tightening soon.

Definitely. I'm voting for Becky Lourey for Governor and Darrell Stanton for Senate.

I wanna try to f**k it up for the Dems as much as I can.

I'm not sure??? My feeling is that it will be a RAZOR thin margin either way. Seems that many polling places are running low on disaffiliation forms in both Cranston (Laffey's turf) and Warwick (Chafee's turf)this would indicate a large number
of unaffiliated voters turning out. The theory has been a large turnout would be a boost to Chafee, we'll find out soon! Another pretty good open thread on this race can be found at http://www.anchorrising.com/
