Neanderthals are often thought of as the stray branch in the human family tree, but research now suggests the modern human is likely the odd man out.

His analysis is probably correct. However, it is our uniqueness that made us more competitive. The Neanderthals were far stronger than modern humans. At one time in the not very distant past Neanderthals and Modern humans existed in Europe (and probably else where) at the same time. Our side won. They are dead and we are not. It was our uniqueness that allowed us to win. Mother Nature does not forgive the weak or unsuited.

Sounds like this anthropologist must be a Democrat.

"In the broader sweep of human evolution, the more unusual group is not Neanderthals, whom we tend to look at as strange, weird and unusual, but it's us, modern humans," Trinkaus said.

Modern humans, for example, are the only members of the human family who lack brow ridges, Trinkaus said.

"We are the only ones who have seriously shortened faces," he added. "We are the only ones with very reduced internal nasal cavities. We also have a number of detailed features of the limb skeleton that are unique."

This seems like a useful study. It is also an example of scientists continually reexamining the data to better understand our past.

In grad school my evolution professor considered Neanderthal to be late European erectus; that seems to fit in with this current thought.

And your comment that the scientist must be a democrat. I don't understand that at all. Republicans can be evolutionary scientists too.

Only one who is a Neanderthal would think that they are more normal than we are. It sounds like a comment from a Democrat.

Hey, it was tongue-in-cheek humor...but I really don't feel it should be necessary to tell people that on this forum.

I posted the Nebraska man illustration for fun. In general, it is a reminder than one should not speculate too wildly, and a little humility about "scientific" claims is in order.

The posted article seems pretty sound, IMHO.

It's that stoopid agenda again.

How the heck is this a standard for "Normalcy?" What are these people getting at? Neanderthals have more ape like features so they are more normal?????? This is a bit of twisted analysis to be sure.

"Neanderthals are often thought of as the stray branch in the human family tree, but research now suggests the modern human is likely the odd man out."

Not likely. Neanderthal was NEVER an ancestor of modern man. I know that's blasphemy to many, but look these up if you disagree:

The (mitochondrial) DNA sequences were from five specimens from widely separated sites over a period of years.
According to the DNA, Neanderthal was NOT a human ancestor.

Funny you don't hear much about this, isn't it?
