Worried GOP bids to shore up conservative support for Nov.

Leaders fear those disillusioned with the Republican-led Congress could stay home on Election Day, giving victory to the Democrats.

For all those glum conservatives out there, Terry Jeffries has a message: Yes, the Republican-led Congress has failed to plug the leaks in the nation’s borders. Yes, federal spending is out of control, despite pledges by Republican leaders to temper it. And, yes, Congress has failed to pass key social measures once thought all but assured, considering Congress and the White House are in Republican hands.

But Jeffries, the editor of Human Events, a respected conservative newsweekly, also wants readers to realize those frustrations will seem piddling if Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the strident Democratic leader from California, becomes speaker of the House after November’s elections.

Concerned that disillusionment among conservatives may keep them home on Election Day, conservative groups and opinion leaders have embarked on a two-pronged strategy, on one hand urging Republican congressional leaders to assuage their conservative base in the few weeks left, and on the other imploring the base not to abandon deserving Republican candidates at their time of need.

Through articles, opinion columns and talk radio, as well as Internet blogs, they are warning conservative voters that unless they flock to the polls in November, the Republicans may lose control of the U.S. House, and that the margin in the Senate could get dangerously close.

Nobody wants the dems in power, but I'm not sure why we're painted as the bad guys. A lot of the GOP constantly insults the Constitution and base, and nobody asks them why they dared to do such a thing considering the circumstances.

The base works hard and gets Republicans elected. The politicians then do whatever they want. Come election time, literally the security of the country/world rests on the insulted conservative base to elect more Republicans.

Oh, so conservatives are supposed to blind vote Republican again and think that is going to solve anything? How many times does the less-of-two-evil strategy have to fail before it sinks through certain people's skulls that it does work?

There is no chance for ANY significant changes in this nation with a CONSERVATIVE majority in Congress and a conservative in the White House. The biggest obstacle to that objective is RINO and liberal Republicans. Until they are eliminated, there will be no significant changes in the nation.

If conservatives keep rewarding Republicans that compromise, why would the Republican party ever stop compromising? They won't if they know conservatives are dumb enough to vote for them no matter how much they spend and no matter what kind of pseudo-amnesty legislation they attempt to passs.

Conservatives MUST vote for conservatives and let the RINOs die on the vine -- even if that means allowing Democrats to temporarily take the a seat.

Who cares of Nancy Pelosi is speaker for two years if in 2008 conservative Republicans end up having a working majority in the House? A little gridlock would do wonders for Federal spending and make the Republican party realize it must putforth conservative candidates.

Yet somehow things we wanted all ended up getting hamstrung, blocked by procedural moves, etc.... funny how that happens.

Most of the social issues have been pushed by liberal judges. Getting conservatives on the court is the most important way to address the issues that 'social' conservatives care about. It is going to be a slow process because, in many instances, the 'social' conservatives represent a minority opinion.
