I think they just chose 9/11 because the date worked for them.
I've yet to hear proof to the contrary. The original date was for sometime in June, if memory serves me correctly.

I find the timing of 9/11 to be very suspicious - too convenient relative to the elections. Why couldn't they have waited until just after the elections?

666/911 is an irrational number that is contrary to the definition of an irrational number.
It rained like heck in the NYC area the evening of September 10. If the terrorists were fearful of rain, they probably would have decided then to wait a week or two, rather than go to all the trouble of preparing for the next morning which also might have been rainy and maybe have to cancel at the last minute.
The Austrians choose St. Vitus Day to have Archduke Franz Ferdinand visit Sarajevo and review the troops. Had he come on a different date, he would have most likely been killed on that date!

I think 9-11-2001 was chosen because of the weather report, very clear so that the terrorist pilots would be sure to see the targets.
The very absence of weather problems that day allowed us to land 6,000 planes across the US rapidly without even one mishap...which was a miracle IMO.
