MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Thousands of Saudi students are enrolling on college campuses across the United States this semester under a new educational exchange program brokered by President Bush and Saudi King Abdullah.
This will quintuple the number of Saudi students and scholars in the United States by the academic year's end. And big, public universities from Florida to Oregon are in a fierce competition for their tuition dollars...............
....Clark Kent Ervin, a former inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), said the U.S. government has yet to ensure proper safeguards are in place to do effective background checks on all applicants.......
"Not only are the students fully funded, but they're also paying out-of-state tuition."
Kansas State boosted efforts to court Saudi officials in the past year, flying administrators and department heads to the Saudi Embassy in Washington. It's paid off: Last month about 150 Saudi students started classes there, each funded to the tune of about $31,000......
"It's an opportunity to increase understanding of Saudi Arabia for the United States and of the United States for Saudi Arabia."
As Kansas State students enjoy a string of home football games this month, they also are preparing for the campus' first celebration of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month.
"We really want to make this special. We're going to truck in halal food from Kansas City,"
Mr. Holland said. "The Saudi government is trying to place the students in a variety of institutions across the country, but where you get the competitive advantage is how you treat the students when they get here."...........
"These 15,000 students will really jump-start education, and that will be a great addition to the kingdom," Mr. Goodman said. "At its base, it's about mutual understanding."

FAYETTEVILLE The more than 2, 400 students who graduated Saturday from the University of Arkansas must recognize they now live in a global village, said honorary degree recipient Jo Luck, president and CEO of Heifer International.
They are entering an increasingly shrinking world, where the forces of globalization are smashing down barriers and linking cultures.
Princess Areej Ghazi of Jordan served as an example of those cultural links as she walked the floor of Bud Walton Arena on Saturday morning.
Ghazi graduated with a doctorate in curriculum and instruction. She was born in Oman and studied in schools spread across the United States. She now lives in Jordan.
University officials believe she is the first princess to earn a degree from the school. Former Queen Noor of Jordan, the wife of King Hussein bin Talal who died in 1999, received an honorary degree from the university in 2001.
Ghazis husband, Prince Ghazi Bin Mohammed, is the personal envoy and special adviser to his first cousin King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein. Abdullah II is said to be the 43 rd-generation direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad.
The greedy Universities are certainly selling out our security in exchange for $$$$$, but President Bush's State Department are the ones handing out the student visas to these "friendly" Saudis.
The whole country is blind now, and oh how the islamofacists must be laughing at us as we self destruct in the name of greed, multiculturalism and twisted government policies. When it's all said and done, Bush will go down in history as the stupidest President of them all, simply because he should know better than to allow the muslim version of the Trojan Horse to enter our country by now, whether by wide open borders or visas. But if he doesn't see the Mexican Trojan Horse carrying twenty million invaders, it's doubtful he sees much of anything.
Now if you had a bunch of Christian missionaries who wanted to live in Saudi, they'd be welcome at the local mosque ~ they just couldn't preach Christian doctrine.
Liberalism is similar to Islam in that it demands strict and total obedience. No deviation is tolerated.
It is clear to me that the student deal is a "carrot" designed to offer the saudis a few of us, or maybe a lot of us, but not ALL of us....when most of here us know that a few, or a lot of us will never be enough...
They have promised to kill us all...
This is an exceptionally adroit move by the President and the King.
Freepers are bigoted toward Saudi's based mostly on bad press and general ignorance. The bias is not deserved because it is directed at a few rather than the many.
The best way to counter the AntiAmerican propaganda is to have many educated citizens who know the truth. By living in American heartland away from the sin filled bluezone coasts, the good and the english language will rub off.
You should rest assured that King Abdullah will carefully vet those in this program to insure none are AlQueda.
Once again.....this is a truly great announcement.
How can you fight a war on terror when you leave the borders wide open and invite 20,000 people from the country whose terrorists killed 3000 Americans into your country? We're begging to be attacked again. Utter madness.
I'm glad someone has seen the light. ILLEGALS ARE MOST LIKELY A BOOST TO THE ECONOMY AND ARE PATCHING UP SOCIAL SECURITY. I also agree that all this is temporary and in the long run, the mexican illegals will fail to achieve this permanently.
The next question is "do you really think a message of kick the illegals out, produce a recession, and put social security into worse shape is sellable to the US public."
"Colleges do it for the money, pure and simple. They would like us to think that they are above that, but in reality they are all scrambling for the money."
But it goes beyond this. The deal is being put together by the White House.
"Years ago we had a Saudi get kicked out of school because he got involved in a knife fight in English class with another Arab.
"
Sounds like a pretty wimpy Muslim. A real Muslim would have blown his rival up.
.....They have promised to kill us all...
You are absolutely, totally wrong. You are terribly misinformed. While there are some, they are a minority of a minority.
The community colleges of America have been educating young Saudis for many years. They have carefully studied the situatiuon and learned that they get the most bang for their educational buck at small schools. The are also insulated from the distractions of the big state universities.
The Saudi's already like us. Americans built modern saudi Arabia. Those who count know that and want more America....not less.
answer: We haven't hit bottom yet.
Giving spots in American Colleges Americans don't need or want.
That's today; back then Arabs were happy to use blades. It's a machismo sort of thing.
I'm sure those colleges will regret their actions if one of these "students" detonates in the Student Union at the height of the school day. If that happens, I'm sure they will find a way to blame it on: a gas leak, a reaction to anti-Arab descrimination, or even anger at the Israeli occupation--anything but terrorism.
Are they, or are they not, every one, muslims?...and as such, potentially subject to the will of some lunatic imam? How are you so sure that the good king can be absolutely sure that those in his program do not have evil intentions?...maybe because he is a car racing fan (he is a former Jordanian National Rally Racing Champion), a qualified pilot, diver and free-fall parachutist. His others interests include scuba diving and collecting ancient weapons.?
I hope that you are right, and the young Saudis will come here and get washed with our culture and values...but they are still muslims.
The Saudi's already like us. Americans built modern saudi Arabia. Those who count know that and want more America....not less.
If they indeed are Americanized, and still muslims, does not make them worse than infidels...subject to the wrath of allah?
I appreciate the Saudi lesson, but reading your post is like reading something from a P.R. spokesperson hired by the Saudis.
And...You haven't given any proof or citations coming from any Saudi muckety-muck that they "really like us"..all we have is your opinion, and we all know about opinions.
I, on the other hand, have facts...19 out of the 20 hijackers on 9-11 was a Saudi....Ben Laden, who promised in the name of allah, to kill us all, is a Saudi....two glaring and in-your face examples of Saudi trechery and hate. If this is the minority of a minority...why don't the majority of the majority go find the minorities and show us who are so terribly misinformed that the majority of the Saudis really don't want to hurt us? They have an army and a lot of money...why are they not helping us find and kill the minority of the minority?
How many churches are built in Saudi Arabia? I guess churches are not a modern thing.
The problem is that muslims can react to the sordid lifestyle portrayed on the TV and become super islamic as a backlash - After a muslim student comes here and watches some Jerry Springer shows, a little Oprah, and a Michael Jackson concert or two on TV, the muslim student (or any rational person) would conclude that a country that creates this trash (aka the Great Satan) should be destroyed before this trash spreads - so the muslim student becomes radicalized and joins Al Queda.
The correct solution, as proposed by Steve Sailer, is Disconnect. Do not allow any further muslim immigration into the U.S. Many Al Queda types were former students in the U.S., like Sheik Muhammad, who became radicalized here.
I read all you wrote and it confirms your ignorance.
You know only what you hear or read in an extremely biased segment of the press and from others who like you have a very strong and unjustified religous bias.
Your bigotry is similar to that of the Islamic fanatics who like you condemn all for trangressions of the few.
They didn't want churches. They wanted infrastructure and administrative governmental buracracy. That's what they got.
Churches have nothing to do with it.
.....muslims can react to the sordid lifestyle portrayed on the TV and become super islamic .......
Some will but the record shows most don't. The youunger American educated Saudi population is just beginning to take control of businesses and governmental functions from fathers and uncles. They have not succomed as you fear.
My alma mater (UNC) had one decide to show his gratitude to Allah by running people over in a rented Jeep.
