To Hold Senate, G.O.P. Bolsters Its Most Liberal

WARWICK, R.I., Sept. 9 -- With a barrage of television advertisements and the mobilization of its get-out-the-vote machine, the national Republican Party has lined up to beat back a conservative primary challenge to the most liberal Republican in the Senate, Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island. The outcome on Tuesday could help determine whether Democrats have a shot at taking back the Senate.
In an extraordinary pre-emptive announcement, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has said it will concede Rhode Island to the Democrats should Stephen Laffey, the mayor of Cranston, defeat Mr. Chafee in the primary.

"One party with an "R" behind each name will be pure perfection."
What would be even more perfect would be 535 Coburn clones.
Because you're from Wisconsin,I'm willing to forgive your complete ignorance of the political landscape here in New England.
If you were a native New Englander or had carefully studied New England politics, you'd see the folly of the statement quoted above.
My point is that the guy was written off at the beginning and the "experts" have been proven wrong. They may be filthy leftists, but at least they're staying consistent with their beliefs. Anyone who supports Chaffee is selling out.
"Some people here would rather be ideologically pure and out of power then to make the compromises needed to retain a majority and exercise power"
The power that's been excercised for the last 5 years is destroying this nation!
Ok people, first let's consider the SOURCE of this infomation!! (NYT...Hello!!!)
Second, the RNC should be fighting like mad to get a true conservative in EVERY seat, if this stategy is factual, and it will get MORE conservatives in the senate and Repubs hold onto power, fine, let them go for it!
The RNC won't get a dime from me for hanging on to the 6 to 8 RINO spineless, liberal prix, we wouldn't lose a thing by getting rid of them! CHAFEE, MCPAININTHEASS, COLLINS, SNOWE, HAGEL, GRAHAM, can all switch to the LOSER DBM/Dem party as far as I'm concerned they are with them on the issues any way.
She just won the nomination in FL's PRIMARY on September 5, 2006.
If you want to roll the dice and believe all these things will remain under Democrats then go for it. I won't be betting on it with you.
The Democrats will not take back the Senate. Dream on, NY Slimes.
If the Senate is divided 50-50 and control comes down to the RI seat, Chafee will opt to caucus with the Dems and put the RATs in control of the Senate.
Haven't you RINO worshippers learned ANYTHING from the Jeffords debacle? We were sooooo much better off when a "Republican" won in Vermont, right?
I got news for you. Chafee is so liberal he makes Jeffords look like Jesse Helms!
Joe Loserman said the EXACT same thing (not to mention he's about 5 times more liberal than Kean overall) and a bunch of freepers are STILL demanding we support him over our own party's nominee.
Gotta "stop Lamont". Having Loserman's 90% liberal record would be soooo much better than Lamont's 95% liberal record, I guess.
yes, 50-50 represents some risk to us. but a Dem holding that seat is a certainty to caucus with the Dems, so would you rather have some chance, or none at all?
Because...let me explain it one more time...the GOP leaders ALWAYS BACK INCUMBENTS RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION.
If Harris had just controlled her ego and ran for re-election to her House seat, she would have not only gotten endless party support, she would have coasted to victory. Instead she insisted on running for an extreme uphill campaign for the Senate.
Chafee on the other hand, should have simply filed for the RAT primary if he wants to vote like Hillary.
the CT race is symbolic at this point.
we want to be able to say that the same man the Dems told us just a few years ago was fit to be their Vice President, now isn't even fit to be a member of the senate with support from their base. That to hold his seat, he needs republicans and independents to vote for him.
Carnac The Magnificent says:
"There'll be a Jewish Orthodox president of Iran before there'll be a conservative Senator elected from Rhode Island."
Lieberman has about a 0% conservative ACU. I'm not part of that "bunch" of Freepers.
I don't want to hear any more garbage that conservatives "can't win" in RI when the governor of Rhode Island himself is a staunch conservative. You guys all like to conviently ignore the highest ranking official in the state with your "conservatives can't win" talking points. Unfortunately the RAT party doesn't fall for this crap as the GOP and nominate a backstabbing DINOs in states like North Dakota so they can "win". Instead they take the risk of running liberals in conservative states and win on "I'm for North Dakota first" touchy-feely messages.
If Chafee's voting record is acceptable to you, then you'd happily vote for Hillary Clinton if she kept the same communist idelogy but put an "R" next to her name. You'd take her as long as she gave token "support" to the GOP, I wouldn't
We win nothing with Chafee. We might have "control" on a superficial level but as long as he votes CONSISTANTLY with the Democrats (12% conservative rating last year, a voting "record" further LEFT than Russ Feingold and Carl Levin), nothing will pass the Senate floor.
I don't know what you're talking about, and neither do you.
You've got a lot of nerve calling me a moveon stooge.
I'd rather spit on moveoners than look at them.
"Wow a Texan and a Okie agreeing. I like it."
Wrong, Bill. We're both Texans. I was born in Palestine and now live near Wichita Falls. But I must admit I've been one of the Sooner's most rabid fans since 1948, when I was 10 years old.
I like Club for Growth also, but they're not infallible.
I just saw them spend $600,000 to get just 24,000 votes, on the losing side, of a primary in Nevada.
I trust my own judgment best of all.
