O+ is universal recipient. That is wrong! You have it reversed.

Do you really think someone would actually drive a bottle of blood to a person who is in desperate need of some? That particularly bad self-help advice was in post 27: "put it in the cooler chest with lots of ice ... and drive it back to Memphis".
No hospital with competent risk management would transfuse blood of unknown origin that had just taken a 500 or so mile car ride.

Yeah, I know. We are going to work with the Red Cross and see what they can do.

After reading this thread, Maria may be more confused than when she started, but at least it may bring up some points that havent been thought of.
Some freepers have it right.
It's not a great idea for him to recieve O+. That isnt a "thought" or a "guess", its the truth. THere was a poster on the first page that explained the potential risks if he does recieve it. It should be taken into consideration.
Whatever the decision, thoughts and prayers to Maria and her husband.

I have pinged you before for FReepers with medical questions. I hope you don't mind, as you have really helped with your responses. Here is a blood type question with conflicting doctor opinions. Thanks

Adding my prayers, I am O+, sorry. The radio request sounds like a great bet to get more blood quickly.

Right, doctors only carry donated organs in beer coolers. ;)
You are right though, one must go through the proper channels to donate blood. And I have read at least 15 conflicting posts about universal donors and universal recipients. Is there a doctor in the house?!?!

My husband has O- blood. He has what's called, baby blood. We are called all the time to donate.
Sorry, I just now saw this.
I have O+ and have done apheresis many times.
By the way, your husband can take O+ blood.
But O+'s cannot take O-.
To find out for sure, for yourself, call your blood bank.
They give out a little card that has all the blood info you need.
We personally, have not given to the Red Cross since 9/11,
but we have given to Life South for many, many years.
God bless you!

NO! ABSOLUTELY NOT!! What causes an incompatible transfusion reaction is the donor red blood cell (RBC) antigens reacting with the recipient's antibodies. A person with Type O blood, whether it be Positive or Negative, will have BOTH anti-A and Anti-B in their plasma. If they are transfused with any type of blood other than O, an immediate transfusion reaction would result. They have no AB antigens on their RBC so they are able to donate to any other blood type (Universal Donor).
AB is the Universal Recipient precisely because they have neither anti-A or anti-B in their plasma because both antigens are present on their RBC.
For a compatible transfusion, we start with Group (A, B, AB, or O) and Type (Positive or Negative), but we also must perform an antibody screen to make sure the recipient does not have any other antibodies to any of the more common additional RBC antigens. If that screen is positive, we must do an antibody panel to identify the antibodies and make sure any units that we give the patient are negative for that antigen. Once we find those units, we must do a cross-match by incubating the donor cells with the patient's serum in the lab to see if there is any adverse reaction. If not, the unit can be tagged to be received by that patient.

You would think the Doctors would be explaining this, that there blood types that can give to any other and also receive from any other.
The problem is (I believe) in the Ph factor, which is why shots are probably necessary.

Thank you. I've talked with the husband this morning. He is convinced that his situation isn't serious enough to take the O+, but will confirm with his doctor, when they can get in touch with him, which should be today. I am going to forward all these offers and info to Maria via her daughter. It appears to me there is O- blood donors out there, the action that needs to be taken is for his doctor to request the blood be set aside from the designated donors. They are hoping to get this accomplished today, and if that happens I'll post here. Thanks to everyone.
