Right! Naturally this is the weekend and his primary doctor is not available, at least not this evening.

You are to kind with your husbands blood... what say he?
I think he has donated 15 gallons of the stuff. I know he has at least two "5 gallon" pins.

It's O- that's the universal donor. Unless things have changed O- blood types should not receive O+ transfusions.

Transfusions:
If you have type A blood, you can receive blood transfusions from people with types A and O blood.
If you have type B blood, you can receive blood transfusions from people with types B and O blood.
If you have type AB blood, you can receive blood transfusions from people with types A, B, AB, and O blood.
If you have type O blood, you can receive blood transfusions from people with type O blood only.
If you have Rh-positive blood, you can receive transfusions from people with types Rh-positive and Rh-negative blood.
If you have Rh-negative blood, you can receive transfusions from people with type Rh-negative blood only.

Drive to Atlanta with a cooler chest, get the blood, put it in the cooler chest with lots of ice to keep it cool and drive back to Memphis.

Type O negative is only found in 7% of the population, while O positive is in 35% of the population.
O's can only receive O's, but from the things I just scanned, O negatives can only receive O negative.
Almost everyone can receive O negative, however -- but it's no longer considered "universal," as it once was.

I'd take the doctor's word over the prevailing opinion of FReepers. I have been in bad situations with loved ones in the hospital. Docs are not God. You better damn well question EVERYTHING they say and do.

Okay, here's the scoop as it stands now. They say he needs at least two more pints of blood. They say there is none to be had. They say that it takes three days to "process" donated blood so he wouldn't be able to get any for three days. And that's if they can find donors.
I just talked with Maria and she says they (her husband and her) have definitely decided not to do it tonight and she says they are not going to do it at all unless he gets a lot worse. Meanwhile she is going, tomorrow, to talk with his doctor and tell him there are donors willing to donate, but that they are in different geographical locations. She will get back to me when she has talked with him, hopefully tomorrow.
I thank all of you and hope you will continue to remember Maria's husband in her prayers and those who have an opinion or solution will continue to post to this thread.

That is so great!
I donate this Monday...both my husband and I. Five years ago this Monday, he donated blood and I donated a few weeks later to stagger the donations from our family. After that, we have donated every September 11th as part of our remembrance.
We donate other times too, but always schedule it to where we can give on 9/11.
Keep me posted on how this goes...would be great if it worked out! Freepers are the greatest!

Thank you! That says it pretty clearly doesn't it?
To: satchmodog9
I don't think so! The chart says:
Blood Type 0+
Can be given to patients with type
0+, A+, B+, AB+

From what I've learned
Type O is the universal donor
Type AB is the universal receptor.
Something like that.

O+ is the universal donor.
People who are Rh Negative cannot receive Rh positive blood.
