Nurse Strangles Intruder With Bare Hands
Forbes ^ | 9/8/06 | AP

A nurse returning from work discovered an intruder armed with a hammer in her home and strangled him with her bare hands, police said.

Susan Kuhnhausen, 51, ran to a neighbor's house after the confrontation Wednesday night. Police found the body of Edward Dalton Haffey 59, a convicted felon with a long police record.

Police said there was no obvious sign of forced entry at the house when Kuhnhausen, an emergency room nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center, got home from work shortly after 6 p.m.

Under Oregon law people can use reasonable deadly force when defending themselves against an intruder or burglar in their homes. Kuhnhausen was treated and released for minor injuries at Providence.

Haffey, about 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, had convictions including conspiracy to commit aggravated murder, robbery, drug charges and possession of burglary tools. Neighbors said Kuhnhausen's size - 5-foot-7 and 260 pounds - may have given her an advantage.

"Everyone that I've talked to says 'Hurray for Susan,' said neighbor Annie Warnock, who called 911. "You didn't need to calm her. She's an emergency room nurse. She's used to dealing with crisis."

51 isn't old, but 260 pounds on a 5'7" frame is a bit hefty, don't ya think? Anyway, the nurse deserves to be commended for taking a felon out of circulation-- something the law was quite negligent in doing.

5-7 and 260? Never mind her hands. She could have sat on him and killed him.

Oh, well, you take your happy endings as they come.

5-foot-7 and 260 pounds

One of the best ER nurses I've ever met (professionally: hers) more or less fit that discription.

I would have thought that a nurse would put on gloves before strangulations.

Holy Moley! 260 lbs? About the right size for a linebacker in the NFL I'd say. I suppose she CAN handle herself. You go girl!

Doesn't really say he's dead or not. Just strangled.

Pretty poor journalism, IMHO.

Is 51 old?

Not to old to defend herself, with spectacular success.

Wow! That's a strong lady, because it would have taken him at least 5 minutes to die, I believe.

Something is missing from this story. Unless you have trained to gain an advantage over an opponent while applying a choke hold, you will be leaving yourself open to both hands and feet of the opponent. It's hard to imagine that he did not gouge an eye, smash the throat. or jab her in the solar plexus.

I suspect the intruder was four sheets to the wind and really was not much of a threat to her immediate safety.

I would go further and check her work history looking for asphyxiated patients..

By definition, when a person is strangled they are killed.

She was a big girl, all right. The bulk came handy resetting my dislocated shoulder ... gives real meaning to "putting he weight into it". That was in the bad old days ... now they just load you up with Versed and you haven't a clue what's going on.
