The overnight Nielsen Ratings are in, and they are a disaster for Katie Couric.
Couric's CBS Evening News was beaten by ABC WNT in New York, Chicago and other major markets
After all the hype, CBS and the other networks had expected a "honeymoon" lasting for at least a month as viewers sampled Couric's new show. It lasted one night.
Although she eeked out a national ratings win, the big cities have already abandoned her.
In places such as New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, where the big advertising dollars are spent, last night's CBS/Couric ratings free-fall mean one thing; Viewers sampled her Wednesday night, and didnt like what they saw.
The huge ratings drop would have been understandable had there been a major breaking story, and viewers would have been expected to go to Gibson or Williams for Cronkiteian experience and gravitas. But it was a slow news night, a perfect time for Couric's "perky charm" to radiate and attract viewers, but both she and the ratings fell flat.
Bottom line, $15 million a year and months of super-hype.... all for nothing.
Old contacts at CBS I spoke with this AM said everyone is making lunch reservation to eat/drink together.... but at restaurants far from Black Rock or West 57th. Everyone wants a "tribal think" to decide who (other than themselves) is to blame for this disaster, but they are eating in out of the way places in Greenwich Village or the East Side, so they wont be seen together.
There will be much more of this over the weekend.
I'm sure they loved her. The bad ratings are probably because they don't like hearing the truth from Rush.
This is what happens when a liberal network, even in small measure, tries to do something honest.
See # 15
Ping!
I think the NY libs were staging a "not gonna watch Rush" protest.
Maybe CBS should try out Britney Spears next?
Yes....but it was worth the wait to hear him speak da truth...
Wait, if this is for Wednesday night, then we don't know yet what effect Rush had on ratings.
They did that in Raleigh's CBS affil also.
"And how many other viewers were Rush fans? Wait until today's ratings."
I waited and watched Rush on the Web. No point in having to endure Couric for any reason.
Especially since we got to see Rush's segment from a link provided here on FR.
What they do is good all the way through a military town like Fayetteville until they find the ONE military retiree who says he's against the war.
Didn't Pam Saulsby's butt-kissing make you sick? Ugh.
LOL, so true. Even forgetting about the political slant...who didn't have the "I can't picture Katie being an anchor" moment when it was announced? What were they thinking?
You're right about the Rush thing....they were counting on all of Rush's audience watching. My thinking was, I spend three hours a day with Rush, why should I boost her ratings for 45 seconds of Rush?
I keep missing the broadcast, what with waiting for paint to dry, watching grass grow, and checking to frig to see if that mossy green thing is growing and moving yet.
What network is whatshername on?
But then she usually does that. I wonder if Gerald Owens would have roasted her. I recall that when the others started in on Steve Levin, he simply knocked his papers and said, "He's always been number one at the Owens house."
That shut them up.
