"The sad result is that despite our many victories and other kinds of measurable gains, electing people to office and building organizations, the gap between the white majority and Latinos is virtually unchanged," said Antonio Gonzalez, president of the nonpartisan think tank. "In some ways (the socioeconomic gap) has widened."
...snip...
"I think we organize to take power but not to govern." he said. "A lot of people want to do the right thing but don't have the support and that's our limitation."
Mr. Gonzalez and a group of Hispanic leaders decided to do something about the yawning socioeconomic gap between Hispanics and Anglos and in December began a series of meetings to figure out a plan for change. Earlier this year, the immigration rights movement exploded onto the national scene and solidified for Mr. Gonzalez and the others that something needed to be right away.
Their efforts spawned the National Latino Congreso, the first comprehensive gathering of Hispanic leaders and community members in nearly 30 years, according to its organizers.

If they want to fix the socio-economic gap, they could try learning english...
I have a thought. Try assimilating!
Hold on to your guns, your gold, your treasure, your family, your memories....Then pack up and leave to fallback country. I will try to hold them off as long as I can....
Try immigrating here legally and learn the english language.
I'm sure language skills and assimilation levels are not viewed as an important factor at all by the people organizing this event.
It's always, always, somebody else's fault with this crowd. Their behavior, culture, lack of foresight, must never be questioned. They're just perfect people.
Many would rather that the rest of us learn Spanish.
Get these wetbacks the hell out of our country.
Do it like all other immigrants to this country have done. Come legally and assimilate one person at a time.
"Brown is the new Black."
Let 'em make fools of themselves.
"I have a thought. Try assimilating!"
Double dittos to that.
It really PMO's that I have to "Press One for English" on voice mail or ATM's. Why do I have to press numbers for my own language in my own country?
Why don't THEY have to press about 1,348,957 for Spanish?
And Rep. Henry Bonilla is nowhere to be found. Yeah. That tells me all I need to know about their "agenda."
They don't speak for me. http://www.dontspeakforme.org
Some Asian immigrants could do better at assimilating, but Asians have a nearly fanatical respect for education.......
With strong anti-illegal invaders sentiments running high in this country, assimilation would naturally be curtailed. Let the Hispanics go back and enter this country legally, with the desire to leave the old country behind and become true Americans, then perhaps they would see these problems disappear. The very fact that they present themselves as a political force is troubling, just adding fuel to our resentment.
Their first problem may be making skin color and national origin a qualifier. So very racist. Tsk, tsk.
That's one of my pet peeves too.
I remember the days (40 years ago) when "separate but equal" was frowned upon. Now the unwillingness of a significant number of Hispanics not wanting to assimilate has institutionalized "separate but equal" and we're suppose to bend over backwards to make things easy for them.
That's because Asians have a nearly fanatical respect for personal responsibility.
