Couric best pick for network news [“Couric is a soldier fighting for women everywhere”]

It is hard to believe that a nation that prides itself on equality and freedom of speech has not had a female solo anchor of a major network television evening newscast up until now. Tuesday, Katie Couric became the first for CBS. CBS wanted a new look, and they got it. As Walter Cronkite announced: “This is the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.” She smiled and began with a simple: “Hi, everyone. I’m very happy to be with you tonight.”

The spotlight that CBS has been waiting for has finally arrived. CBS network re-evaluation and revamping via focus groups has created a new news show. Why Couric, one may ask? And the answer: why not? In terms of qualifications, she is over-qualified. She has an interview résumé that includes presidents Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. John F. Kennedy, Jr. even gave Couric the first and last interviews of his life. She is also the longest-serving co-anchor of NBC’s The Today Show and has proven that she is not afraid to fight for what she believes in. After the death of her husband Jay Monahan from colon cancer, she underwent a colonoscopy on The Today Show and created, according to researchers at the University of Michigan Health System and the University of Iowa, the “Katie Couric Effect.” In the July 14 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, the group reported that colonoscopy rates nationwide jumped more than 20 percent in the days and months after Couric’s on-air test.

I thought the Katie Couric Effect was the sudden lurch for the remote control whenever Katie appears on the screen.

I am way ahead of allayall. I have not seen a TV news show in abour 15 years, having placed my last set in the alley with a carefully perforated CRT screen. Everything I learn about TV and TV shows I get from FR and various blogs these days.

When the "chair" isn't really worth anything any more it is given to a woman.

Bernie Goldberg was on BOR last night and he said the 1/2 hour of "news" had been "feminized."

I can't watch her... but I bet if I did... I'd sense the aroma of baby-powder and a full, week-old diaper pail. And I bet I'd be soon up to speed on the latest fad-diets and all the new foods to avoid.

I guarantee that if she lasts a year... the cBS Evening News will become the cBS Today Show.

Since they fortuitously eschew motherhood in large numbers, perhaps that fate will be avoided. La Couric, herself, has not reproduced.

That must be why she's like the third "first woman" to sit in a network anchor chair.

but it's not "news."

Ok, good point. I think they are trying for more female viewership, which is the more significant pool of TV watchers. There are many exceptions but most women just don't care what's going on in the world, are more interested in superficial things. It amazes me how women can chat for hours on cell phones yet not say anything very important or very interesting, at least to me. The most popular female personality type has no interest in politics or real world events.

I like to watch mainstream TV news to analyze the DNC infomercial. CBS is walking on eggshells to boost their ratings, which is entertaining because of the election coming up. Usually all objectivity goes out the window near election time.

Good one... but what would be the image behind Dan-O?

That's actually Walt-O! And it's a map of Vietnam.

Ironically, Ol' Walt was lying to us then too. Well, differently lies from what McNamara was spewing but lies none the less.
