Couric best pick for network news [“Couric is a soldier fighting for women everywhere”]
The Badger Herald(University of Wisconsin) ^ | September 7, 2006 | by Joelle Parks

It is hard to believe that a nation that prides itself on equality and freedom of speech has not had a female solo anchor of a major network television evening newscast up until now. Tuesday, Katie Couric became the first for CBS. CBS wanted a new look, and they got it. As Walter Cronkite announced: “This is the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.” She smiled and began with a simple: “Hi, everyone. I’m very happy to be with you tonight.”

The spotlight that CBS has been waiting for has finally arrived. CBS network re-evaluation and revamping via focus groups has created a new news show. Why Couric, one may ask? And the answer: why not? In terms of qualifications, she is over-qualified. She has an interview résumé that includes presidents Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. John F. Kennedy, Jr. even gave Couric the first and last interviews of his life. She is also the longest-serving co-anchor of NBC’s The Today Show and has proven that she is not afraid to fight for what she believes in. After the death of her husband Jay Monahan from colon cancer, she underwent a colonoscopy on The Today Show and created, according to researchers at the University of Michigan Health System and the University of Iowa, the “Katie Couric Effect.” In the July 14 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, the group reported that colonoscopy rates nationwide jumped more than 20 percent in the days and months after Couric’s on-air test.

If women consider themselve equal why do they need a "soldier" fighting for them?

For that matter, if they are equal, who are they fighting and why?

And of these equal women who specifically asked "katie" to fight this mysterious batte for them?

Bernie Goldberg was on BOR last night and he said the 1/2 hour of "news" had been "feminized."

I peeked last night a few times while watching Brit and came across a woman crying about the plight of Mexican women leaving their children with grandma while trying to earn a buck here uring the Speak-Out bit. Her suggestion was that we should help "Central American" governments so their people wouldn't have to come here. See...it's that simple!

The closing bit was about a blind kid who was carrying on, despite his handicap. This would have made a nice little story on their Sunday morning program, but hey...this is supposed to be the network's summary of the news of the day.

Now if that's what Bernie meant by feminizing the news, I'd have to agree with him. I was waiting for Oprah to come out "unexpectedly" and send a car to the kid, blind or not.

What I'm waiting for is when Old Crusty Couric is still wearing mini-skirts and giving beaver shots at age 75 on the evening news.

I watched because she had Pres. Bush on but she is very stiff and it feels really uncomfortable to watch. She seems uncomfortable doing it. Forced smile. I think she is going to bomb. Anyone else see it?

Unless there's someone waiting in the wings who has "gravitas"(Russert, for example) I don't see her getting pushed overboard.Over time, her ratings will stink, but See BS News is accustomed to that.

Actually, if they were paying sufficient attention to the job itself, most women should be incensed that they finally got the CBS anchor chair after Rather et. al and the liberally-biased MSM had made it an irrelevant job (low-rated media dinosaur).

An accurate article would basically say--thanks for nothing SeeBS.

This "article" has all the earmarks of a twittering, airheaded cheerleader boosting the Perky one over anything resembling substance - solely because they are of the same gender. To date, of all the reviews I have seen of Couric, none has been particularly flattering.

[“Couric is a soldier fighting for women everywhere”]

The soldiers who fight for women everywhere are in the U.S. Military.

she's fighting for women everywhere

Where does this siege mentality come from? Who decided men and women are in opposing virtual tribes fighting each other?

This is extremist militant lesbianism where dating men is sleeping with the enemy and should only be done to take a Senate seat or the Presidency.

"As the highest-paid news anchor to enter family rooms across the nation, Couric is a soldier fighting for women everywhere, but the estimated $15 million a year she is paid is not because she is a woman, it is because she is the best."

Jeez what a dinkleberry. Well, I suppose if she wants to call a pretentious, condescending, overstuffed Eva Braun who has been botox'ed into oblivion "the best" then I guess she's entitled to.

I remember when the Badger Herald was founded as a conservative alternative to the communistic Daily Cardinal.

Now it is a pathetic copy-cat.

She's not fighting for me. She's a liar. And a sensationalist. And an embellisher. And an agenda pusher.

She represents me, as a woman, about as much as those dykes at NOW.

I remember when the Badger Herald was founded as a conservative alternative to the communistic Daily Cardinal.

When I was there earlier this decade, the BH wasn't conservative, but they were certainly more reasonable than the Cardinal. The op-eds were usually balanced, i.e. point/counterpoint. Or if a lib wrote on one day, a conservative would write the next. It's also a bigger paper, so there's room for more opinions. The BH also took the liberal view of democracy (liberal used in its real sense), and supported numerous measures that would have increased the ability for the students to determine how their tuition fees were spent, how their student government was operated, etc. The Cardinal always supported the status quo, because the left wing was entrenched.

Her suggestion was that we should help "Central American" governments so their people wouldn't have to come here

To their credit they didn't offer any leftist suggestions on how to do that. They are walking on eggshells trying to not alienate half of the potential viewers.

There are conservative solutions such as smaller government, less taxes, less corruption, more individual liberty we could help Central America with.

I thought the blind story was interesting. I wonder if an electronic hat could bounce an optimized ultrasound in a circular timed fashion then convert the reflections into human hearing range. We could all have eyes on the back of our heads.

"I thought the blind story was interesting."

It was, but it's not "news."
