WASHINGTON — President Bush, warning Americans that "terrorists are still active... and still trying to kill our people," announced Wednesday the transfer of 14 key terrorist suspects from secret CIA custody to the U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, including alleged Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed.

He also announced that he was asking Congress to pass legislation that would allow the United States to try the terror suspects for war crimes.

"The families of the 9/11 attacks have waited patiently for justice," Bush said in making the announcement.

Issuing a warning to terrorists around the world, the president added, "We will find you, and we will bring you to justice."

The president's comments came during a White House speech on the War on Terror, his third such speech, and before an audience of 9/11 families and first responders.

Bush acknowledged for the first time the existence of secret prisons to hold terrorist suspects, and outlined how the CIA and the government's intelligence and law enforcement agencies were fighting a secret war against Al Qaeda to "stop attacks before they occur."

He detailed how the administration plans to legally try the more than 400 detainees held at Guantanamo Bay.The suspects will be transferred to Defense Department custody as a first step in preparing them for trial, a senior administration official. The suspects would be afforded some legal protections consistent with the Geneva conventions, he said

"They will act like they are going along with it at first, but eventually their hatred for Bush and their nut case base will push them over the cliff."

They cant go along with this ... all along we were told that Gitmo was another Gulag, that the WOT was a diversion, that Bush advocated torture ... all the Democrats whole political agenda is about how everything Bush does is a failure.

If they agree, they will have admitted they were wrong all along.

If they obstruct, they will have handed an issue to the Republicans.

Let me be the first to predict the Democrats will howl 'at the timing of it'.

"Bush led, Democrats fled"

"Democrats lied while terrorist victims died"

It is just such a shame, or disgrace or something that he HAD to say this , or that it has to be done this way. I am so freaking appalled at all of this I cannot tell you.

"We will find you, and we will bring you to justice."

I know he has to phrase it that way, but the "bring you to justice" thing smacks of long-drawn out comfortable trials in beautifully panelled Americn courtrooms.

Weak.

He should at least IMPLY a tireless hunt, a relentless stalking of this scum leading to an inevitable end, a wasted, meaningless death in some squalid corner of THEIR backward, barbaric $hitnole of a country at the hands of the US military.

For more of the truth read this book, a bullseye!................

"The Dems are screwed?? Terrorists now are to be tried as war criminals in U. S. courts, fully defended by Ramsey Clark and a panoply of volunteer ACLU enemies of liberty, who will claim, in part, that inasmuch as the Congress has not formally declared war on anyone these "illegally" detained defendants cannot be guilty of war crimes."

This is not true, that is not what is required nor planned (there are still military tribunals but USSC ruling requires some Congressional action to specific rules) but even if it were, it would definitely help expose the anti-American terrorist supporters for who they really are.

"If they agree, they will have admitted they were wrong all along."

That will be their trick. They will appear to agree at first, and then work to undermine the legislation when it comes to negotiations and amendments. The MSM will try to give them cover so the 'new media' better be watching as always to call them on it.

You overlook the power of repetition. By saying the names over and over and over the point will bee made that action was sucessful.

all that could be done, has been done. we can't expect the President to fight the war all alone - with the entire judiciary against him, and Congress unwilling to pass needed laws, and on and on. Bush pursued this to the end, what do you want him to do now?

He has challenged Congress here - he has served up the worst of the captured terrorist bunch, 9/11 plotters, and is telling Congress "what rights would you like to give them?".

We know where the Dems are on this, and unfortunately in the Senate, there are many republican weak hands on this issue, led by McCain and Graham. That's the reality we are dealing with.

It wasn't my intent to fault Bush in regard to this matter. He has been fighting a multifront war, especially since he had the audacity to win re-election in '04. A a major front in that war is the domestic partisan war that has been declared against the person of George W. Bush, largely motivated and exacerbated by borderline insanity of personal hate in the service of partisan politics.
