Vote on Rumsfeld fizzling out in Senate

By ANDREW TAYLOR, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago

An effort by Senate Democrats to force a vote on whether Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld should stay on the job appeared to be fizzling out Wednesday. Republicans, calling the move a political stunt, promised to block an up-or-down vote on the measure and Democrats conceded there's not likely to be any vote whatsoever.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., on Tuesday said Democrats were drafting a nonbinding resolution "that would express a loss of confidence in the Bush administration's Iraq policy, including a loss of confidence in Secretary Rumsfeld."

But Boxer acknowledged that the Rumsfeld resolution could be struck down on a point of order since it is not germane to the pending legislation, the Pentagon spending bill. A Democratic leadership aide speaking on condition of anonymity said Democrats would not challenge the point of order.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., repeatedly supported Rumsfeld as he made the rounds of news shows Wednesday morning. Frist's chief of staff, Eric Ueland promised Republicans would kill the resolution through the procedural move.

"The American people want us to be safe and secure. They recognize it takes bold leadership," Frist said on NBC's "Today" show. "I strongly support Don Rumsfeld."

The GOP blocking tactics would prevent politically imperiled Republicans from having to vote to support the way President Bush and Rumsfeld have handled the war, which is increasingly unpopular with the public.

Some Republicans, such as John McCain, R-Ariz., have been sharply critical of Rumsfeld. And GOP candidates Tom Kean of New Jersey and Stephen Laffey of Rhode Island, who is giving Sen. Lincoln Chafee (news, bio, voting record) a very difficult race for renomination, have called for Rumsfeld's resignation.

I doubt it. Bush treats democrats with the same kid gloves that Kofi treats terrorists with.

the only poll that matters is the one on election day, the way the MSM frames the question make it useless. for example, I could be unhappy or dissatisfied about the war because I want them to be more aggressive but the MSM would lump me into the group that they claim want us out of Iraq

I read on NRO that Tony Blair may be facing a similar vote in Parliament, with the resignation of more than a few of the members of his party.

LOL, don't laugh.

So you think the Dems intended to vote out Rumsfeld today????

They just wanted to demean the Pres and the War again, right?

Did the press report this vote as serious blow to the President and the war?

Yes.

Did the press, or will the press report that they have no votes?

No.

Did the press, or will the press report the letter from the WH to Harry Reid in a great rebuttal?

No.

When was the last time the Right won a PR battle?

Never.

Does the public support the war anymore?

No.

So why the rolling eyes?

They are "GOP blocking tactics" but "Democratic legislative strategies."

Coop, the President and the Congress CANNOT run a 24/7 political campaign year after year!!

It is too costly, logistically impossible, its exhausting and required enormous amounts of volunteers stuffing very expensive literature.

We cannot run ads all day, nor make constant phone calls.

We cannot travel and have rallies and speeches constantly, and govern at the same time.

Rush stated today that ABC caved and will do some "minor editing" to the documentary. It will have klintoon show up in a Superman suit.

If the Democrats take over either the House or the Senate, these kinds of resolutions will become daily events.

How anyone can read this and continue to cling to the notion that there is no difference between the two political parties is beyond belief.

No, The miniseries were not produced by ABC. ABC authorized it because Tom Kean, the primary memeber of the 911 Commission oversaw and verified the facts for the miniseries. Actually Bill Clinton and his Democrat scum and vermin can jump all over ABC all they care to. It won't help. Bill Clinton, even with all the hype around him has no power whatsoever. ABC is looking at the millions of viewers it will garner from this miniseries. Even if the numbers are not great at the first go around, once the truth opts about Billy Boy and his traitor buddies, the viewing audiebce it will draw and DVD purchasers will make millions for ABC. It's a Disney thing. Look at it this way. If you took the Disney revenue from the movies "Cars", "Pirates of the Caribbean" out of the 2006 Hollywood film revenue stream 2006 would be a nightmare for Hollywood. It's Disney and Disney alone that brought home the bacon. These two movies, at the end of the day, with DVD sales and film items will gross about two billion dollars together. Add the new Buena Vista Disney film "Invincible" and you have a literal gold mine. Clinton means nothing to Disney whatsoever. Besides Bill Clinton is the murderer of thousands of American innocents. Just witness those poor souls leaping from the windows of the WTC and realize who placed them in that predictament, Bill Clinton. I wonder what the "Jersey Girls" will think after Sunday and Monday night.

I agree and it doesn't help when purist Pubs are carping that they are staying home in Nov. to ' teach the Pubs a lesson. Yeah, quite a lesson; Reid and Pelosi lead the Congress and end all chances of national security, tax cuts and border enforcement plus any Court appointments.

Thanks for all the good information. I guess I will have to watch the miniseries. Funny you should mention the Jersey Girls because they have slipped into the shadows after Ann Coulter took them out in her book "Godless". Don't count natural Boy out yet, with Kofi stepping down from the UN watch for scumbag Bill to jockey for that job. He has made enough friends with enemies of the USA to maybe pull it off.

"They are playing UN."

And I thought they were playing "France."

Not much difference, although I suppose the UN has a better win/loss record. Maybe not.

No, Commander in Chief, you don't get off the hook either. Our country has two enemies. Those who want to destroy us from the outside and those who attempt it from within. Your Soldiers are dealing with the outside force. It’s your obligation to support them by confronting the axis of idiots.

Great article. And Pres. Bush is starting to deal with his "obligation to support them by confronting the axis of idiots."
