N. Korea: Troops In Border Area Given Ammo & Grenades

'Good Friends', "N.K. Stepping Up Semi-Wartime Footing "

[2006-09-06 18:10]

N. Korea notched up its semi-wartime footing in recent days, issuing grenades and ammunition to troops stationed in the border area (with China), while N. Korean General Staff is drawing up a border shutdown plan, according to Sept. 6 issue of the news letter by Good Friends, a N. Korea relief aid agency .

The N. Korean General Staffs issued an order on July 30, titled, "To the entire military regarding keeping up their vigilance, and redoubling their efforts to prepare for battle." In it, it instructed, "Do not count on neighboring countries. Defend  the right to self-determination for our country and people, with our own might."

N. Korean military does not issue ammunition to troops in the border region ordinarily, fearing that armed soldiers could create troubles.

'Good Friends' had reported in late July that N. Korea declared semi-wartime footing the day after U.N. Security Council passed the resolution against N. Korea.

Its latest news letter also reported that Kim Jong-il gave an instruction that troops main diet should be rice where rice is produced, potato where potato is produced.

These new activities by N. Koreans are drawing attention because it came out in the midst of further isolation of N. Korea since the missile launches.

I wonder if this is primarily aimed at domestic political control(creating a mood of crisis) or guarding against the potential military threat(from China?)

Time will tell.

Crazy as a loon is right....but....Kim and his family have survived this long by being attuned to things....this order was not given by a loon....it was given by someone who wants to survive.

I've always said that if we can convince Rand McNally to initiate a massive global campaign of re-labeling their maps by re-naming North Korea as "Taiwan" and Taiwan as "North Korea", we just tell the folks in Beijing that they're free to reunite with "Taiwan" (wink wink) any time they choose (and with all the military force they deem necessary), and the U.S. will deal with "North Korea" (heh heh).

(sigh) - if it were only so easy.

I guess it depends if the troops are facing outward or inward.

Did you catch the leak of the internal North Korean KPA military documents yesterday, as reported by Chosun Ilbo I believe, about them going more on a war footing (the usual vitriol but also looks to be heightened tension), the references to Condi Rice (not very flattering), etc.? They carried the Japanese translation of that on the Japanese Chosun Ilbo site yesterday.

The part about the rice and potatoes shrieks of NK being low on fuel to transport supplies, not that you can trust anything said over there...

The UN General Assembly session starts next week, Tuesday 9/12, to be precise.

Hardliner Iranian President (Ahmajinidad) Applies for U.S. Visa

and he's planning on "flying in" on a plane with Hugo Chavez from Cuba.  A place where our security forces aren't likely to be able to check the plane over for security reasons.  And the plane will be flying into New York right at the time Bush will be speaking at the UN.

What's to stop them from putting a nuke on board, flying into La Guardia and just setting it off?  Of course Hugo and friend won't be on board, but then what?

But maybe they've given a heads  up to their friend who is "so ronery."

Darth Cheney better damned well be in an "undiscolosed location" with lot's of communication and protection right at hand.
