9/11 Miniseries Is Criticized as Inaccurate and Biased
NY Times ^ | September 6, 2006 | JESSE McKINLEY

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 5 — Days before its scheduled debut, the first major television miniseries about the Sept. 11 attacks was being criticized on Tuesday as biased and inaccurate by bloggers, terrorism experts and a member of the Sept. 11 commission, whose report makes up much of the film’s source material.

The six-hour miniseries, “The Path to 9/11,” is to be shown on ABC on Sunday and Monday. snip...

On Tuesday, several liberal blogs were questioning whether ABC’s version was overly critical of the Clinton administration while letting the Bush administration off easy.

In particular, some critics — including Richard A. Clarke, the former counterterrorism czar — questioned a scene that depicts several American military officers on the ground in Afghanistan. In it, the officers, working with leaders of the Northern Alliance, the Afghan rebel group, move in to capture Osama bin Laden, only to allow him to escape after the mission is canceled by Clinton officials in Washington.

snip...

[ABC said] “The events that lead to 9/11 originally sparked great debate,” the statement continued, “so it’s not surprising that a movie surrounding those events has revived the debate.”

Former Gov. Thomas H. Kean of New Jersey, the chairman of the Sept. 11 commission and a consultant on the miniseries, defended the program, saying he thought the disputed scene was an honest representation of a number of failed efforts to capture Mr. bin Laden.

snip...“The basic fact is that on a number of occasions, they thought they might have been able to get bin Laden, and on those occasions, the plug was pulled for various reasons.”

snip...

“From what I’ve been told,” Mr. Limbaugh said, according to a transcript on rushlimbaugh.com, “the film really zeros in on the shortcomings of the Clinton administration.”

Right-wing media bias rears its ugly head--LOL! Boyoboy, the left doesn't like it at ALL when they don't get to control every single bit of the MSM on EVERY topic. This is rich...

I heard a littlle bit of Rush going on about this yesterday, so I knew the libs would go crazy. Excellent!

And, the timing right before elections is great.

Considering GWB was president for only 9 months before 9/11, I guess that leaves Bubba "guilty as charged".

You can tell when the truth about the left comes out....they scream VERY loud....

8 months vs 8 years...so true....although the Bush administration hit the ground running...they actually did hit a wall...the Gorelick Wall...begun under clinton...which was one of the most preventative measures not to be able to access what would transpire within the next 8 months....the lib/dems always seem to forget that pesky little fact...and of course with th a--holes on the 9/11 comissions (she being one)...it was hardly given a thought!!!

It will be heavily edited or censored.

My understanding is, ABC has no plans to edit the finished product, and in fact, they plan on showing the entire 5 hour series commercial free.

I'm to understand the New York Times is writing about bias? Umm. I'll think about that. Ummm. No, it doesn't compute.

What's scaring them is that many Americans who don't follow politics closely will watch this and they'll be unable to dissuade them after the fact.

What I find laughable is Richard Ben-Veniste, the harshest critic of this film, was on the same 9/11 Commission that this movie is based off of.

He was counting on the DBM to keep little "facts" about the Clinton adminstration's failures quiet. He never expected a movie to be made about them.

He was counting on the suits at ABC/Disney to chop up a film made by an independent film director. The director has no agenda, Ben-Veniste does.

In fact, Rush said he's seen the film, and Bush doesn't get off so easily in this movie either, and went on to say that this is probably the most accurate film about the portrayal of the government's behavior a person is ever going to see leading up to 9/11.
