Haleigh Poutre Almost Victim of Euthanasia, Now Making Good Progress
Life News ^ | September 4, 2006 | Steven Ertelt

Boston, MA (LifeNews.com) -- Haleigh Poutre was the victim of child abuse and was nearly killed via euthanasia when Massachusetts officials gave up on her after she entered a coma. Now Poutre, once termed "brain dead" by doctors, continues to improve and is speaking a few words, her grandmother says.

Sandra Sudyka, the girl's biological grandmother, is no longer allowed to visit her granddaughter and now says she is ready to speak to the media about Poutre's condition.

She told The Republican newspaper that she last saw Poutre on July 18 but indicated she was "doing well."

"She was bright-eyed and smiling. She is always responsive to us," Sudyka explained.

Department of Social Services had asked Sudyka not to talk with reporters about Haleigh, but since they will no longer allow her and Haleigh's biological mother, Allison Avrett, to visit the 12 year-old, she said she's going to talk to the media.

"I decided since they broke the deal, I am going to talk. People should know how well she is doing," Sudyka told the newspaper.

"They don't want people to know how she is doing after they wanted to pull the plug," Sudyka said.

DSS spokeswoman Denise Monteiro declined an interview with The Republican but said that the visiting privileges have been suspended, not terminated.

Haleigh first began speaking in June, her grandmother told the newspaper.

"I was saying to her 'I love you,' and she was trying to say 'love' and it came out as a vibration...'ove,'" Sudyka said.

Sudyka, who is working with an attorney to adopt the girl, said she has said hello, responds to comments and questions, speaks nonverbally and is able to write her name. Haleigh can't walk and is confined to a wheelchair.

Avrett, Poutre's biological mother, lost custody of her daughter after physically abusing her. Poutre was put into a foster home where her adoptive parents also abused her. Her adopted mother committed suicide after abusing Poutre so much she had to be hospitalized.

DSS took Poutre into custody and when she appeared to slip into a coma, the agency asked the state Supreme Court for permission to take her life. That's when Poutre began responding.

Poutre has been receiving physical, speech and occupational therapy since January 26 at Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton.

Gov. Mitt Romney appointed a commission to look into how the state failed to properly handle the girl's case.

The Terri Factor...

I am on life support, too, selfishly like a drink of water sometime during the day. Feeding tube from the mouth??

On March 18, 2005, a Florida judge raised an emotionally charged seven-year legal battle to a crescendo and ordered doctors to remove a feeding tube from the mouth of a severely brain-damaged St. Petersburg woman named Terry Schiavo.

Her fate — whether she had a right to live or her husband had the right to let her die — had become a rallying point for those who believe establishing a "culture of life" is of paramount importance. But all court appeals, all state-level avenues to keep Schiavo on life support, had been exhausted.

Sue Kelly faces her toughest challenge yet

I think we should all take the pledge: "I REFUSE TO BELIEVE ANYTHING IN THE MEDIA UNTIL AFTER THE ELECTIONS."

The Terri Factor....as a factor...

Over the past five years of the Bush presidency, Republican congressional majority and political ascendancy of the religious right, the term “values” has gained currency in our national lexicon. So-called social values issues such as gay marriage, “intelligent design” and the Terri Schiavo case have helped to determine close elections.

The Terri Factor...

Skip Campbell:

State Sen. Walter "Skip" Campbell, the Democrat running for attorney general, voted twice to re-insert the feeding tube of Terri Schiavo and nearly cried on the floor of the state Senate when he realized she ultimately could not be saved.

Yet now, 19 months after Schiavo's death, Campbell has positioned himself as the candidate who rigorously opposed the unpopular state intervention.

Flipping positions on Schiavo... Attorney general hopeful Campbell has misrepresented his votes on Terri Schiavo .

The Terri Factor, more fretting...(right to die still meaning right to kill.)

Gore would NOT have signed the USA PATRIOT Act. He would NOT have made men like John Ashcroft and Alberto Gonzales U.S. Attorneys General. He would NOT have nominated people like Priscilla Owens or William Pryor for lifetime seats on the US Courts of Appeals, and you would never have heard of the name of John Bolton. NOR would Gore have nominated women-unfriendly Supreme Court justices who now threaten to revoke women's reproductive rights.

Gore would NOT have politicized gay civil union or stem cell research, nor would he have intervened with Terry Schiavo's right to die. He would NOT have quietly condoned the implementation of Diebold's and its competitors' paperless electronic ballot boxes. NOR would he have turned a blind eye on Florida's and Ohio's voter intimidation and disenfranchisement shenanigans.

DEMOCRATS suck, yeah, but are still not equivalent to REPUBLICANS

The Mikey (Kiss of Death) factor...

But underneath it all I'm left with something I can't get past. Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave, as I said, had no problem at all in speaking about me and my family on the floor of Congress. Yet she can't bring herself to even look at me. She has to seek help from the police to have me removed from a public debate.

It's crystal clear that Marilyn Musgrave not only can't admit she's wrong, she can't even face the consequences of her own actions. She must believe that if she runs away fast enough or surrounds herself with enough people who tell her she's great, it never happened.

Michael Schiavo, describing the actions of Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave who, during a debate with her opponent in Ft. Collins, Colorado, tried to have Schiavo removed from his front row seat next to the debate timekeeper, then, when that failed, insisted that the timekeeper be moved to another seat so she wouldn't have to see Schiavo when she looked at the timekeeper.

Quote of the day:

Kottkamp...

He became friends with Crist while working with the attorney general on passage of the Marvin Davies Civil Rights Act, which gave the state more authority to investigate discrimination. But Kottkamp also co-sponsored a 2001 bill, later withdrawn, that would protect displays of the Confederate flag on public land.

Kottkamp has disagreed with Crist on high-profile issues such as phone-rate increases, which Crist backed, and in supporting the controversial move to reinsert a feeding tube into brain-dead Terri Schiavo. Crist stayed out of that battle.

Crist's running mate not just GOP follower

This week's flap -- Rush Limbaugh vs. Michael J. Fox -- brings to mind a famous moment in the 2004 presidential campaign.

Veep candidate John Edwards was in the pulpit, in the great tradition of southern Bible thumpers and cemetery plot salesmen. His sermon was about embryonic stem cells. Edwards lifted his eyes piously and preached, "We will stop juvenile diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and other debilitating diseases. ... If we do the work that we can do in this country, the work that we will do when John Kerry is president, people like Christopher Reeve are going to walk, get up out of that wheelchair and walk again."

(Reeve, alas, died that week.)

Charles Krauthammer, a doctor, himself paralyzed, was furious at Edwards's demagogy. By raising false hopes for a cure, as both Edwards and Fox did, you impede future research. If you're not honest, people will stop believing you and your proposals will fall on deaf ears.

"In my 25 years in Washington, I have never seen a more loathsome display of demagoguery. Hope is good. False hope is bad. Deliberately, for personal gain, raising false hope in the catastrophically afflicted is despicable."

Still good reading!

Ping to wagglebee thread on Michael Reagan and stem cells...

The overwhelming number of candidates, Republican and Democratic, favor research on stem cells gathered from adult and core-blood sources. But many, mostly Republicans, oppose ESC research because harvesting the cells requires killing a living human embryo, and in many cases result from cloning human embryos for the sole purpose of harvesting the stem cells from the embryos killed in the process.

All across the country, Democrats and their lackeys in the media distort the issue by portraying those opposed to embryonic stem cell research as being opposed to all stem cell research, refusing to draw the crucial distinction between the two types.

I'd reckon this freshman editorialist does not know how lowly is the position of a freshman senator. Rick Santorum already has status in the senate. Casey would have none. So how is Casey going to deliver on any promises to the people of Pennsylvania?

I left a comment over there that politicians who want to use tax dollars to fund ESC research should lead the way for us and get a hypodermic full of stem cells in their heinie. After that I'll listen :-)

May we remember Mrs. Vo who was threatened by the Texas Futile Caregivers and was spared from that machine. She has died on her own terms.

Here is but one account, not THE story, but one story:

..................

Monday, May 22, 2006
The Mrs. Vo's

Some time ago, I worked on writing about the case of Madame Vo in France. Now there is another Mrs. Vo with whom to be concerned, this one in the less-than-exotic Austin, Texas.

Mrs. Vo is another one of those people in Texas declared to be a futile care case under a peculiar state law that says a hospital's ethics committee can declare a case as futile and give the family 10 days to find another facility to which to transfer their loved one or find another doctor to provide care.

Epiphany

May Our Lord watch over the soul Mrs. Vo. and guard and protect her family...

Mrs. Vo, Requiescant in Pace

Our intent is to remember Mrs. Vo on November 1, All Saints Day.

The Terri Schiavo case turned on who, if anyone, had the legal right to allow Schiavo, who was ruled by lower courts to be in a "persistent vegetative state," to die.

So it all boils down to WHO gets to kill her? Yes, who, not whether.

Crist aided and abetted in Terri's murder for his judicial heroes (nazis) Greer and Whittemore. Crist sues puppy mills and does tips for prom night. He doesn't do anything substantive. He never has. He chose Margaret Thatcher over Ann Margaret in the paper. That right there proves he's gay. lol (sarcasm tag).

The big cc signs are coming down. Hold on.... cc's signs were 50 FEET BY 85 FEET (kinda mao to me).

When Mikey is stalking candidates who are against torture and murder, does TERRI PAC pay for his expenses? Is he also getting his Sheriff's Dept. salary while stalking candidates? I think he is because he can. I don't know who he's blackmailing but it's not someone at the local level. It goes much higher than that.

Crist was on NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO the other day. They asked him about the latest Rasmussen poll. Crist said, "It makes my heart sing."

People are voting for some kind of freak. makes his heart sing? what is he? a chorus boy???

During the second debate, Crist said "I don't just want your vote, I want your heart." WHAT, for transplant? lol

There's an NBC debate by Chris Matthews tomorrow night, Monday. I wonder what freakish, phony things cc will say then.
