The Terri Factor...

I am on life support, too, selfishly like a drink of water sometime during the day. Feeding tube from the mouth??

On March 18, 2005, a Florida judge raised an emotionally charged seven-year legal battle to a crescendo and ordered doctors to remove a feeding tube from the mouth of a severely brain-damaged St. Petersburg woman named Terry Schiavo.

Her fate — whether she had a right to live or her husband had the right to let her die — had become a rallying point for those who believe establishing a "culture of life" is of paramount importance. But all court appeals, all state-level avenues to keep Schiavo on life support, had been exhausted.

The Terri Factor....as a factor...

Over the past five years of the Bush presidency, Republican congressional majority and political ascendancy of the religious right, the term “values” has gained currency in our national lexicon. So-called social values issues such as gay marriage, “intelligent design” and the Terri Schiavo case have helped to determine close elections.

Health care: Is it for all?
