US lawmakers fault Bush government on Iran

WASHINGTON: Cutting across party lines, US law makers have faulted President George W Bush's administration for not having a clear position on Iran even as an expert asked as to whether America was willing to pay the price of the military option.

Democrat Congressman Marty Meehan has argued along with others that the US military's forward deployment was so stretched out that it was having an impact on the way a decision on Iran would have to be factored.

"We have 140,000 troops in Iraq, recruitment is down in our military. We need more soldiers and Marines, and we're having difficulty doing that because of the war in Iraq. But this idea that we can simultaneously have a war in Afghanistan and Iraq and then deal militarily with Iran, I don't think that's viable at this point," Meehan told CNN.

He said he hoped that there would be a "new policy", a "new strategy" in Iraq so that the US was able to get its military to meet "challenges in the rest of the world".

Meehan alleged the Iranian nuclear programme represented a "national security threat" to the US. "I think we need a sense of renewed engagement with our allies. We have to show, I think, more strength, and it may be a case where sanctions, we can look at, but we need a renewed effort," he added.

Republican Congressman Chris Shays, a critic of the administration on Iraq, slammed the UN and Europeans on Iran even as he poked holes on US intelligence on that country.

"I think the UN has shown itself to be somewhat impotent, And Western Europe is simply tentative beyond measure. They do not want to confront Iran, and they do not want to help us in Iraq, and that's a huge message to the Iranians, that they're the players in that area" Shays said, adding intelligence on Iran could be better.

But this idea that we can simultaneously have a war in Afghanistan and Iraq and then deal militarily with Iran, I don't think that's viable at this point," Meehan told CNN.

"Today the United States is in a very weak position and it is not in a condition to impose another war on the American taxpayers," Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said during a meeting with a visiting Syrian foreign ministry official.

Wasn't Meehan the first one out of the Capitol building when that false terror threat was called in?

Oh please! The democrats wouldn't support any military action against Iran even if we could do it for free. They cut the crap out of the military in the 90's and now they complain we don't have enough troops. They want Rumsfeld to resign and would never support another Republican Sec of Defense. It's all Bushes fault.....yadda yadda yadda.

If Iran is attacked it would be only from the air. 200 Fighters and bombers, NOT NEEDED IN IRAQ, can do the job to destry Iran's nuclear program.

All else is BLAH BLAH BLAH!

What's cute about Meehan's triangulation is that he knows perfectly well that the natural followup question "So you're in favor of military action in Iran?" will never be asked of a Democrat by his MSM allies.

For Meehan to openly tell enemies of the United States that we are unable to fight and are therefore will not use military options-- when the President is openly telling Iran that the military option is on the table-- ought to be seen for what it is Treason.

There is one president. If Meehan would like to try his chances in an election I'd love to see him lose. Until that time he should never contradict the commander in chief in matters of war. This is so common among congressional members yet so completely out of line!
