CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the Crocodile Hunter, was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.
Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called Oceans Deadliest when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous bard on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.

How terrible for his wife and children (child?). He took way too many risks.
How unfortunate. I agree, you poke and prod enough dangerous creatures and odds are one of 'em will eventually get to you.
Crickey!
RIP Steve, we loved you over here in the US. You will be missed mate. God rest your soul.
Sucks...
Man that guy was funny but scary dangerous.
Very sorry to hear this. Not at all surprised, but very sorry. God bless and comfort Terri and the children.
Yes, as El Rushbo says, "Tigers are tigers".
This is so sad.
My kids love watching him! God rest his soul.
Steve was a modern day Dr. Doolittle. He loved animals, his wife and children and life with a passion that is a rarity nowadays. I know he did some crazy stuff, but the thing is he knew what he was doing. His time on this planet was simply up.
Call him crazy if you want to, or over the top about animals, or whatever, but this so sad, a tragedy. He was vas very entertaining, and seemed to be a really nice guy with such enthusiasm and love for the creatures of this earth, including the very dangerous ones. I really enjoyed watching his shows, and I can think of many stinking assholes in this world who deserved to die and not him.
I'll miss him. Despite how some will say "I knew it was coming" remember, he wasn't killed by the croc or the snake that we all "knew" would someday get him. He seemed to know what he was doing with them, as attested by hundreds if not thousands of encounters. He was killed by a stingray, an animal that isn't known exactly known for killing people, much less stabbing them through the heart. This was a freak accident.
Man . . .
Despite his "insane" behavior, he knew his stuff. He will be missed
..seeking out dangerous animals all over the world and annoying the crap out of them.
My daddy used to tell me, "if you don't want to be nibbled, don't play with the bunny." He aslo used to say, "If you play with wild animals, it's not IF you will be bitten, it's WHEN."
RIP, Steve. You did many things for our entertainment that most of us would not do...
God rest his soul and prayers for his family.
He died while doing something that he loved to do...if there is such a thing as a good way to go, that has to be the way. RIP.
