[history]
SHOCKED members of the public have begun laying flowers in memory of Steve Irwin at his family's animal park, Australia Zoo, north of Brisbane.
Meanwhile, radio networks in Brisbane were jammed by callers this afternoon who could not believe the Crocodile Hunter was dead.

I'm sorry to hear about his demise. He was so enthusiastic about the wildlife especially the crocs.

I was trying to listen to a web-cast of a radio program in Australia, the connection was shaky at best but the callers had me pretty choked up. I'm trying to find a station I can hear more reliably.

According to the 2GB radio show, she learned of it a short time ago.

Oh no, what is cBS going to do now? This will take the constant 24 hour a day 7 day a week media attention away from Katie Couric.

Several callers likened the loss to the death of Princess Diana. The celebrity worship in Western Culture is reaching ridiculous proportions. Yes, when I first heard that Steve Irwin died, I thought it was a sick joke (which was my initial reaction to Diana's death as well) but some of these people are so enamored with these celebrities, it borders on the psycho and during times like this the media are willing to give them a platform for their 15 seconds of fame.

Did not his dad die of an encounter with some wild animal? Anybody know the details of that?
To: Aussie Dasher
Truly very sad...May Steve rest in heavenly peace.
Prayers, too, for his wife and children and all who loved him for his enthusiastic devotion to the animal world. He was truly one of a kind.

You're right. I watched a "Sports Century" edition on Vince Lombardi last night on ESPN (so-called) Classic, and the host said that Lombardi remains the "conscience" of America.....(the fact that ESPN "Classic" is an absolute joke, showing little truly classic, and pounding us with poker, etc., is for another time of discussion)

If I remember correctly, he also had his baby within feet of a crocodile, and got a lot of bad reaction - deservedly - from the public because of it.
To: Tamar1973
I don't really relate to Steve as a celebrity. I really loved his passion and enthusiasm for life. I think he contributed a lot of good educational info and entertainment. Does that make sense? That is why I am so sad right nos.

As I recall, the baby was a lot further from the croc than it seemed. Cameras CAN lie...
