He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.
He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured.

I'm sorry for this guy and his family. I was once stung by a Man-O-War in the Gulf and it felt like I was sawed in half. Very sorry for Steve Irwin, this is really bad news indeed.
what a shame-he had great and educational shows-unusual for tv -he brought a sense of unbounded enthusiasm to his work-he will reallly be missed
You can tell a lot about a society by the type of person it mourns. Steve Irwin wouldn't have hurt a fly, had a rare enthusiasm for life, and wanted to show others the miraculous nature of living creatures. Again, one of the good ones.
There is also the issue of this being a public figure and not a private citizen.
That is bad news.
Phooey.... he did crazy stuff in life, and I don't think anyone is ~really~ surprised a critter got him. But it's still a loss for all who knew him, or at least felt we did, when he's had his face so close to our TV screen all these years.

Mr. Irwin, always entertaining, was a professional that deserved the respect of those of us that work with animals on a daily basis. Behind the mask of entertainment he truly respected and cared for the animals and reptiles, wild or domestic, with which he worked.
And don't forget Jacques Cousteau lost his son Phillipe Cousteau in an airplane accident.
Rest in Steve, we'll miss you more than you could have known. There is one fewer real man out there. Rest in Peace.
Damn straight. I can't imagine anyone not liking him. Australia has lost its #1 good-will ambassador, and more poignantly, his family has lost their son, husband and father way too soon.
May God comfort them.
And may God bless his memory. A fine, fine man from everything I know of him.
He was a good guy who was entertaining and had the class to not be political. (that I know of)

Amen. He died doing what he believed in. Freak accidents happen all the time. He could have died in an aircraft accident, or been killed in a car crash like his mom was. I just wish he could have been around for his children.
He would likley say:"No regrets!" and "See you next time around!"
He lived so large it is hard to accept his passing.

I can't get on the site either, but the story does appear to be true. FOX, CNN, MSNBC, Yahoo, and an Aussie wire are all saying the same thing.
Totally shocked!!! As you might tell from my screenname I'm a scuba instructor and have made many dives with stingrays and they've always been very very docile. Easy to pet and feed by hand and never threatening.

It usually is the seasoned veterans who get killed because they get lazy and take unnecesary risks.
Yeah, there was also one episode where he was talking about an aggressive and deadly species of snake they were searching for. In the middle of his dialog, he suddenly noticed one of these snakes right at his feet as he was talking to the camera. He went dead silent and didn't move or say a word for about 20 seconds until it slithered away. The look on his face was priceless, imminent danger. That was the only time I think I've ever seen him display true fear on camera.
His mom was killed in a car wash?
He most certainly would have regrets in leaving his children without a father.
