Steve Irwin killed in stingray attack

By 7News Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has reportedly been killed in a stingray attack near Cairns on Australia's far north coast.

It was believed Irwin had been swimming off the coast of Cairns when he was stung.

"It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest," Brisbane's Courier Mail reported this afternoon.

Irwin was best known for his documentary series "The Crocodile Hunter".

He was born in Victoria and found his love of animals after following in his father's footsteps, volunteering his services to the Queensland Government's East Coast Crocodile Management program.

He spent years living on his own in the mosquito infested creeks, rivers and mangroves of North Queensland, catching huge crocodiles single-handed.

In June 1992, he married American Terri Raines after they met when she visited Irwin's Australia Zoo.

The 44-year-old is survived by his wife and two children, Bindi and Robert.

Very sad. He has very young children :(

And a very beautiful wife. He could be annoying at times, but he was always fun and entertaining to watch.

Say what you want about some of his antics, but the man loved nature, and had a true joy for life, from what I could see in his shows. He seemed to love and respect the creatures that he wrangled.

Sure, it seems inevitable that he would be killed by a wild thing, but it's sad that it had to happen.

I suppose it is good that he went out doing what he loved... playing with deadly animals.

He could have just as easily choked on a ham sandwich.

God bless his soul if this is true and may God bless his family.

I never thought he'd go out this way.
Rays have one hell of a nasty spear, but I figured it would be a croc or snake.

With a life like that, something was bound to happen one day, but how sad. He did what he wanted to do in life, which is more than most of us can say.

Rest in peace, Crocodile Man. Keep hunting the good hunt in the sky.

Just awful.

But people need to remember they are dealing with wild and potentially deadly animals...it is a truly dangerous job.

I still find this very upsetting.
