For Harry Anderson, the New Orleans Magic Is Gone
The New York Times ^ | August 30, 2006 | JOHN SCHWARTZ

NEW ORLEANS — In New Orleans these days, even a magician can run out of tricks.

Harry Anderson, the illusionist, comic and former star of sitcoms like “Night Court” and “Dave’s World,” has lived in New Orleans since 2000, when he left Hollywood with his wife, the former Elizabeth Morgan. They rode out Hurricane Katrina in the French Quarter, in the building that houses Oswald’s Speakeasy, Mr. Anderson’s nightclub. Their home, whose ground floor was given over to Sideshow, their magic and curiosity shop, was in another building in the Quarter.

In the weeks after the storm, even before the power was back, Mr. Anderson opened his club for what he called French Quarter Town Hall meetings. The weekly gatherings, which at first offered little more than camaraderie by candlelight and warm beer, evolved into a de facto government for a part of New Orleans that had experienced little flooding but could not begin cleanup and rebuilding because of the city’s overall paralysis.

The meetings drew officials from the city, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers — all of whom were given an earful — and bit by bit, things improved. Many locals, in fact, gave Mr. Anderson a lot of credit for kick-starting the Quarter’s recovery.

So it is especially poignant that the Andersons have now decided to leave. But their story is not unique: many in this city are suffering the same continuing loss and strain that led these two to their decision. So their departure raises the question of whether others who can afford to leave, those who have not sunk every penny into a now-moldy house or a devastated store, will also move on.

I've heard of it being referred to the Pairs of the South and a haven for homosexuality...and that was on a tv show about what homes are worth across the country.

As a resident of Memphis, I suggest you avoid it like the plague. Memphis is horrible. Hope to get out of here in the next 2-5 years, preferably east TN.

I guess Harry does not fit in Mayor Ray Nagin's Chocolate City! And doubling his property taxes sounds like typical Democratic Fiscal Suicide. Idiots Blanco is a Political and Economic Dunce. Nagin is a Racist Asshole who fled to Dallas, while his Police Force looted the City. Last one out turn out the lights. And we have Black Race Pimps demanding more money.

Four of the five severely damaged Parishes are majority White populations. Of course the Racist SOB reelected by the Democratic Black Community are too stupid to elect someone to clean up the mess. Instead they brought back the idiot who helped to create it in the first place.

I came to Huntsville in 1993 from northern Virginia. Still to this day, I sometimes find myself smiling as I drive around town, thinking about how nice it is to be in Huntsville, Alabama.

Semper Fi,

I've lived in Huntsville off and on since the very early 60's and have been back here now for about 25 years.

The city and surrounding area has really changed in that time. I miss seeing the cotton fields all over the place. Progress - it can't be stopped. Though the shopping is now terrific! lol

What the...???? The city needs more tax money after Bush sends them billions?

That's only half of the story. Once collected and spent, the multiple billions extorted from the taxpayers will create even more urban blight, crime, and entrenched poverty.

Democrats perfected the art of total waste in the 1960s with Lyndon's Johnson's "Great Society" fraud. New Orleans continues that grand tradition.
