Obesity pandemic engulfing world

Obesity has reached pandemic proportions throughout the world and is now the greatest single contributor to chronic disease, an international conference was told here.

"This insidious, creeping pandemic of obesity is now engulfing the entire world," Australia's Monash University professor Paul Zimmet, chair of the 10th International Congress on Obesity, said on the opening day of the conference.

The spread of the problem was "led by affluent western nations, whose physical activity and dietary habits are regrettably being adopted by developing nations," Zimmet told more than 2,000 delegates.

The world now has more fat people than hungry ones, according to World Health Organisation figures, with more than a billion overweight people compared to 800 million who are undernourished.

The congress on obesity is held every four years, with the last three staged in Toronto (1994), Paris (1998) and Sao Paulo (2002).

"The conference will treat obesity as the keystone of all health priorities because it is the single greatest contributor to chronic disease throughout the world," said University of Sydney professor Ian Caterson, the event co-chair.

"There are now more overweight people in the world than undernourished and we are seeing the double burden of the extremes of malnutrition -- undernutrition and overnutrition -- in many developing countries.

"We know this is not about gluttony -- it is the interaction of heredity and environment. We know that small changes can make a big difference in peoples weight and health."

Zimmet said the problem needed urgent solutions -- not just widespread changes to diet and exercise but the rethinking of national policies on urban and social planning, agriculture policy, education, transport and other areas.

He also warned in an opening address that the growth of obesity-related diabetes, or so-called "diabesity", was set to bankrupt health budgets all over the world.

Around 370 speakers and presenters at the six-day congress will discuss a range of issues, including scientific research on how the brain regulates energy and advances in the prevention and clinical management of obesity.

The conference is being attended by academics and health professionals from Australia, Japan, the United States, Britain, Canada, Sweden, Indonesia and New Zealand.

Look lady, we all understand you love your little cancer sticks. That dog and pony show is now so old that it's not just funny. Just admit they're bad for you but you just don't care and everyone will be happy. It's the intellectual dishonesty that you bring to these discussions that trips all the triggers.

Speaking of intellectual dishonesty..........I have yet to see anyone claim that smoking is a healthy habit, especially SheLion.

So, if you wish to speak of tripping triggers, I suggest you look toward those who mistate, misuse, and outright lie about the things SheLion (and people who work with her, including myself) says before you start throwing stones upon others. And many of them are right here on FR - including yourself.

Are you disgusting and filthy? Yes.

Oh, sorry. I guess I confused "disgusting and filthy" as a pejorative.

Lord knows, garlic jokes, because it's within the realm of acceptibility of the health Nazis, is a real knee-slapper.

You have no clue as to how shallow you are, do you?

Generally fresh produce and fresh meat/chicken is cheaper than packaged processed food.

Grocery stars have far bigger margins on the processed stuff. If you avoid the center aisles and shop around the perimeter of the store you will eat healthier and save money.

Why don't you just move on, dear?

Your grandchildren will be able to point to that small shred of dignity that you finally displayed.

Finally.

So, you would consider yourself in the forefront of the "desirable" reproducibles.?

Yes I would. I take care of myself, bike 40+ miles a week, cook my own food, live relatively healthy. I used to run quite a bit, ran a marathon, now I mostly bike. Today I did a hard quick 12 mile hilly ride that really got the heart pumping and it now feels really quite good. I have learned that my metabolism needs a certain amount of excercise to maintain my weight.

Taking care ofyourself is not a conservative/liberal issue. It's self-responsibility. And it looks like Darwinism may correctly weed out superior homo sapiens from those who engage in self destructive activity.

You misjudge me. I am fully for your rights to smoke. You are disgusting, you smell disgusting (espcially when you can't smell yourselves) and I don't want you around me.

No, I do not misjudge you...........I did not personally attack you in the manner you have just personally attacked me.

Are you disgusting and filthy? Yes.

Personal attacks are against the TOS of this website - I would hope you know that, considering you have been here longer than I have.

Agree...

I was up to 209lbs, (im down to 189 now, lost 20 pounds through nutrition control, running, and working out).

Its really the simpler things that will really help you out. Eg: Dont drink that coke with your food, dont get the side of fries, dont eat desert.

And if one just consiously listens to when the body feels sated, one eats much less.

I dont necessarily reccomend running to overweight people though. Its quite rough on the knees, especially if youre overweight.

Try swimming, or cross trainer machines, or cycling! Theyll all get your weight down.

Incidentally, my dad has diabetes, and the doc assures him, that if he would only lose 20 pounds, it may even go away!

I haven't seen this level of discourse since I was 14 years old.

Congratulations on your progress, though. Keep plugging.

I doubt that. Drum Majorette for the next Jihad is precisely where you'll land.

Wait - I assumed this was a woman.

I see no evidence to contradict this assumption.

I've gotta tell you...I live in a town now, that's SO FREAKING FAT...and you go to the restaurants and they give you enough food to feed a family of four. It's a problem on a lot of levels and it's important to keep talking about it. I'm going to be flamed, but here goes, we've drummed it into kids for so long that it doesn't matter what they look like...they should feel good about their bodies. So you see 300 lb. girls wearing midriff tops and hip hugger pants with their disgusting bellies flopping over and THEY REALLY THINK THEY LOOK GOOD. Again, it's a shame issue. Shame is a great motivator. We've completely taken shame out of society and we're paying the price. Oh, that and Juice drinks.
