The Conservative Case for Rudy Giuliani in 2008

John Hawkins of Right Wing News makes the conservative case against Rudy Giuliani for 2008. Hawkins’ piece largely consists of the same old anti-Rudy arguments wrapped in slightly new packaging, focusing a lot on Rudy’s decade-old socially liberal positions on a few cultural issues, as well as his Manhattanite personal life and some nonsense about unelectability (more on that later). As such, I think this is a great opportunity for someone to lay out the conservative case for Rudy in ‘08. And that someone might as well be me.

Giuliani: Pro-growth tax-cutter

Rudy Giuliani has proven, both during his tenure as mayor of New York and through his subsequent rhetoric, that he is a pro-growth Republican in the mold of Ronald Reagan, Jack Kemp, and Newt Gingrich. As mayor, Giuliani cut city taxes by more than eight billion dollars, reducing the tax burden on New Yorkers by 22%. Giuliani’s low-tax views remain intact. As Race42008 correspondent Kavon noted yesterday, Rudy’s recent visit to Minnesota included an emphasis on achieving economic growth via low taxes and less regulation on the economy. Rockefeller he ain’t; Rudy’s a Reagan Republican.

Rudy: Gingrich-style government reformer

Conservatives who liked Newt’s welfare reform and GWB’s attempt at entitlement reform have an ally in Rudy. As mayor, Giuliani reformed welfare in New York with the same tenacity as the class of ‘94 in Congress. Once again, this ain’t Christie Whitman we’re dealing with; Rudy’s a Newt Republican who also made a serious attempt to take on the teachers’ unions in NYC and fund school choice via charter schools. A President Giuliani means a conservative reformer who will fight for market-based revisions to our age-old bureaucratic messes in Washington.

Rudy Giuliani: Fiscal conservative

As mayor, Rudy Giuliani cut...

If it comes down to McCain vs. Guiliani, I'd pick Guiliani in a second.

"Mr. Giuliani is perfectly happy with Mrs. Clinton and hasn't lifted a finger to unseat her! "

Neither has Rick Lazio, the man she beat. I don't see you berating him for it, so I have to conclude that your problem is with Giuliani on a personal level. If that's your argument Franics, then please, be consistent with it.

I would be inclined to, myself. To be honest, there's something about McCain that makes me uncomfortable, and it's not just his kissing up to the press.

>>>>Wow, telling the truth about how our government has conducted itself over the last six years is now a "talking point"? Think about that concept, Dude, for a minute, then seek help.

Grab you brain and wrap it around a dictionary. Talking points not only note a topic of discussion, they lend support to an argument. In this case a mostly conservative argument, which was my point. Its not against the law for a NYCity progressive [liberal] Republican like yourself, to employ conservative talking points and criticise the current GOP Admin&Congress. Just thought it was strangely out of character. After all, your man Rudy wouldn't do it. Now would he?

>>>>>Predictable; you rolled out the standard insults of Rocky Repub and liberal repub. I'm surprised I didn't see RINO, Fag-lover, and all the rest of the standard repetoire of the rabid, fur-breasted (my God! He said "breast"! On a conservative forum, no less!), connect-the-dots conservative that listens to Boortz and Rush 14 hours a day. Stop it. Learn some new insults, maybe even ones that make sense.

Didn't realize you were that thin skinned and consider posting facual truth to be insults. Most NYCity progressives/liberals, whatever term suits your fancy, are for the most part either Democrats or Republicans. When I lived in NYCity, we called liberal Republicans, Rockefeller Republicans or limousine liberals. I believe that is still the case. Even Giuliani has made that point.

"Mr. Rockefeller represented "a tradition in the Republican Party I've worked hard to re-kindle - the Rockefeller, Javits, Lefkowitz tradition." --Rudy Giuliani New York Times, July 9, 1992

>>>>B) What's left that calls itself a "real conservative" these days only does so because "Nazi" has a really bad connotation.

LOL WOW!!! Now you've shown your true colors. You can't win the debate on the merits of arguing liberal-conservative politics, so you revert to calling all conservatives, "Nazi"'s.

You need to get out of NYCity more often. Come on out to El Paso County Colorado. I'll introduce you to some real conservatives. The ones you don't think exist. Then you can call each of us a nazi to our face, and we'll see how tough you are, or how fast you can run. Being a cheap, petty juvenile, I think you'll choose the latter. All punks run.

I beleive in free speech for all, but there's an old saying, it's best for someone like you to be thought a fool rather than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

You know what they say, the first person to accuse the other of being a nazi looses the arguement. Problem with people like wombat and other new yorkers, is that t hey think new york is the center of the world and above the rest of the country. What they don't realize is the rest of the country often looks down at places like new york city and san fransisco.

I really got a laugh out of your post. Spot on as they say. I am out in flyover country. I am a Republican, Conservative. I am willing to entertain a Giuliani Candidacy. I shopped it around here ( my town). I did not get any major negativity. Red city, in a red county in a red state.

The thing I kept saying in 2004 to the Independents who were not sure. The ones who will count once again in the general election. Ask yourself who do you trust to do the right thing when our back is up against it. I think if Rudy can clarify a few positions, he would be that person.

I realize I am about to suggest this to a person who has no heart, but the man did have cancer at the time. That seemed a little more pressing then running against Hillary.

Mr. Giuliani is perfectly happy with Mrs. Clinton and hasn't lifted a finger to unseat her!

But what about all that "leadership" bull-shirt you RINO lickers like to bandy about?

(*Bullshirt is the actual name of a retail establishment...)

When all the higher-ups are dead, you just might make a Lieutenant Colonel the Commanding General of a Division.

When everyone else is dead you might just consider letting a mayor become President of the entire US of A.

Rudy is a raving rino liberal republican.

If you had a brain to remember or didn't smoke so much dope to burn out your memory, that was the first election... this is the second...

For your information, I have never smoked dope. Why would a person run for the senate if they are going to run for President? We have not elected a sitting Senator to the Presidency since 1960. Doesn't make much sense to blow the money in NY. But you are so representative of what is wrong with conservative ideology. Here I thought stating that you had no heart would be a compliment. It seems that most of your kind pride yourselves on it. But instead you accuse me of being a drug addict. Interesting. I did not read that in VRWC Handbook. When necessary accuse a person with a different opinion of being a dope user. Interesting. That tells me all I need to know about you. Enjoy the red cool aide.

I concede he was a good Mayor in regard to law & order (which did not include his anti-2A stand), but on many other fronts, he simply was no different than a Democrat. A President Giuliani's judicial picks would likely, however, be as ghastly as Willie Weld's or Christie Whitman's, and that cannot be tolerated. If it's a choice between him and McCain, I write in "George Allen." If he's on the ballot in the general, I won't vote for him at all. I'm sorry, but he would be a disaster for Conservatism and cripple the GOP as a result.

If Rudy wanted to "beat Hillary" he should have done so in THIS election. In 2000, he was forced to drop out of the Senate race due to a nasty divorce and prostate cancer, but by 2006, he was a retired mayor known as a national hero.

Rudy's platform is fine in his homestate of New York, so if he wants to beat Hillary there, so be it. Nationwide, Rudy might be a 9/11 hero, but his platform is too liberal for the average Republican. He'd a proven leader on the WOT and would be a great Secretary of Homeland Security, but if the GOP wanted a POTUS who was pro-abortion and pro-gay, they'd support the RAT nominee. End of story.

You had your shot Rudy.

I agreed with your analysis. Rudy's game plan is to use 9-11 to protray himslef as the second comming of Reagan. Sadly, without strong conservative opposition to him, he may con many GOP primary voters. He is leading even on this site.

Right now, I am leaning toward either Mormon Mitt or McCain.

I won't vote for Rudy in the primaries. As for the general election, I don't know what I will do if Rudy wins the nomination.

You could ask Giuliani's friend, Mrs. Clinton...

If Mr. Giuliani is so happy to just sit on his hands and let Mrs. Clinton be his senator, why should any Republican trust that incompetence on the national stage???

I did not know that Mr. Giuliani was sitting on his hands and happy about Mrs. Clinton being his senator. Did he say that?

Got news for ya: although I am a native New Yorker, I also maintain residences in North Carolina (Mr's W's home) and Utah (our vacation/one-day retirement home),and have for many years. That's when I wasn't busy working and living in places like Florida, Montana, Idaho and Nebraska.

You should have asked before you assumed that I have never left New York City. Truthfully, while I've been all over "fly over country" I have yet to meet anyone in those parts that holds such narrow world views as you two gentlemen (I wouldn't characterize what Francis holds as a view: he's merely a parrot), and if I did, I'm sure they wore "White Power" T-shirts and shaved their heads.

The Nazi comment, contrary to popular belief, does not mean I've lost the argument, it is intended to present a recognizable name to something that would otherwise go unnoticed by otherwise good people; that lockstep idological orthodoxy, militancy in the pursuit of that orthodoxy, the reflexive name calling, and the inability to compromise on an issue when it bumps up against that orthodoxy, are all classic symptoms of someone laboring under the curse of rigid totalitarian thinking.

I look forward to the day when your kind is finally consigned to the rubbish heap of history and we can go back to true, republican prinicples unencumbered by people who want to be everyone's Mommy and Daddy (on both sides).
