The "Azzam" Threat: A prelude to Future Jihad in America
Over at the Counterterrorism Blog the ever-insightful Walid Phares has posted a preliminary explanation and analysis of the new videotape from Azzam the American, aka Adam Yehiye Gadahn. A few choice details:

In short, the “Azzam” video reconfirms clearly, in an English language that academic translators won’t be able to distort, that al Qaeda’s movement worldwide and in the United States is seeking total annihilation or conversion of the enemy: American and other democracies.
4) Argumentation tactics:
The “speech writer,” emulating many commentators on al Jazeera or al Manar, hopes to rally many among those who “hate Bush and Blair” but stops short of stating that Jihadism will hate all future US Presidents and British Prime Ministers “if they do not convert.” He reminds us of the Crusades, Inquisition, Hiroshima, and killings in Iraq and Afghanistan. Obviously, the “writer” skips the Genocides of Sudan, and the massacres of Algeria, the Kurds, Shiites perpetrated by Salafists or Baathists.
5) The enemies of Jihad in America
Sensationally but not unexpectedly, he “name[s]” a number of intellectual-enemies in this country: Daniel Pipes, Steven Emerson, Robert Spencer and Michael Spencer. Rarely Jihadi Terrorists at this high level media exposure named symbols of their enemy’s intelligentsia. And in addition to “experts” named in the tape, Gadahn goes on a ferocious attack against American “Tele-Evangelists” and their media, showing the other type of foes al Qaeda is very upset with.
By "Michael Spencer" Phares means Michael Scheuer. Gadahn rails against "the Zionist Crusaders, missionaries of hate and counter Islam consultants like Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Michael Scheuer, and Steve Emerson." I am honored to be in this company, of course, and pleased to see that Al-Qaeda has noticed my work and is unhappy with it.
Maybe Adam Gadahn is angry with me for describing him a couple of years ago as he appears in an old photo: as a "pudgy, long-haired American kid who appears to be locked in a desperate, losing struggle to grow a beard." Adam, I see from more recent photos that you have won that struggle, for which I congratulate you. In your larger struggles, however, you will not prevail.

As for how difficult it would be for Islamic fascist terrorists to force our fellow Americans to convert to Islam, just ask the Muslims over at Fox News.
We need for our military forces to take down Iran's military forces and denazify the people of Iran. That action would break the morale of Islamic fascism worldwide. Iran is their big hope for conquering the world. Such military action by our government would destroy their will to fight.

I don't know about that. Phares and others have pointed out the divisions in Islam. What you say is perhaps true of Shia Islam, but a defeat of Iran wouldn't necessarily stop the Salafists and Al-Q'aeda (who aren't the same thing) from continuing to obtain WMD with which to batter the West to its knees with super-terrorist, megadeath atrocities. Osama Bin Laden has been explicit about seeking to inflict such damage on the West, and as long as the Pakis have a nuclear arsenal, and as long as Bin Laden has nuclear technology available at some level, he still has a card to play.
6) The “friends” of al Qaeda?
“Azzam” names “sympathetic” personalities for whom he has messages for action; He asks journalist Seymour Hirsh to “reveal more” than what was published in a New Yorker article on the War: Obviously an open call by al Qaeda to M Hirsch to resume the attack against the US War on Terror. Then “Azzam” turn to two British journalists and thank them for their “admiration and respect for Islam” encourage them to do the final step: Convert. He names British MP George Galloway and journalist Robert Fisk. But more troubling in Gadahn’s tape was his direct call to Jihadists within the US Armed forces to work patiently till the time comes and they should continue to aggregate while escaping the surveillance of their military authorities. This theme, which I covered briefly in Future Jihad, is of great concern to US national security. The “Azzam” speech brings further concerns as to the credibility of this threat.

Gadahn is another great example of why profiling middle eastern men alone is suicide.
We have many enemies that look just like us.

I agree. Many people have argued that they did not "convert" to anything, since it was done under threat and has no interior effect, so to speak. But to the Muslims, the propaganda value is the same. And whether these guys acknowledge it or not, from the Islamic point of view - where forced conversions are not only allowed but have been the main way of spreading the cult since its inception - they have put themselves under sharia. Muslims believe now that we really don't care what we say or do and will submit gladly after a few gruesome examples (whether beheadings or 9/11) followed by steady threats. It worked for Mohammed and our pimply-faced jihadi is pretty sure it will work for him.
Ironic, that when this sick video has come out, as well as the "forced conversions " of the last week, a number of Christian church, my church, the RC Church has for the Gospel the 7th Chapter of the Gospel of Mark in which Jesus takes a swipe or stand on how the Pharesses enforce man-made laws on being clean and yet still be dirty in the heart. This is a teaching lesson on the dangers of man-made cults and religions such as islam vs. saving truth of the God given good news of the Gospels and Christian faith.
