"Passenger Disrupts Cross-Country Flight"
Sep 13th - 2:13am
By MATTHEW BARAKAT Associated Press Writer
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "CHANTILLY, Va. (AP) - A man wearing military fatigues and throwing punches into the air tried to open the exit door of a jet during a cross-country flight on Tuesday night, airline officials and passengers said.
United Airlines Flight 890 from Los Angeles landed as scheduled at Washington Dulles International Airport at 8:35 p.m., said Amy Kudwa, a Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman. No one was injured.
Ken Wolfenberger, of Whittier, Calif., who was on the flight, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that he helped subdue the unruly passenger. The man wore patches on his fatigues with special forces and jujitsu champion logos, Wolfenberger said.
The man had been acting strangely for about 20 minutes, then sat up, wrapped belts around his hands and threw punches into the air, Wolfenberger said.
Wolfenberger said he heard a flight attendant yell for help and tell the man, "Sir, get your hand off the handle."
"Any time you hear a flight attendant shout 'please help,' you worry that something pretty bad is going to happen," he said.
Wolfenberger said the man was held down and punched by other passengers as he grabbed the man's leg. Air marshals then came and took custody of the man.
The passenger became unruly about 3 1/2 hours into the flight, said United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy."

Coalition Forces Quell Rocket Attacks in Afghanistan, Destroy Mortar
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Sept. 12, 2006 Coalition forces in Afghanistan quelled rocket attacks along the Afghan-Pakistan border yesterday after extremists hiding in nearby hills fired on them, U.S. military officials said.
Its a pretty common occurrence, said Army 1st Sgt. David Christopher, the senior enlisted soldier for Company B, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. It happens at least every other day. Thats about 200 rockets weve taken in the past seven months.
Foreign fighters, al Qaeda terrorists and common criminals often attempt to cut away at coalition and Afghan efforts to improve governance and rebuilding efforts there, officials said.
We have seen a fundamental shift in this focus, said Lt. Col. Chris Toner, commander of Task Force Catamount, which oversees coalition operations in the Paktika province. We (coalition forces) allow reconstruction projects to continue and the government of Afghanistan to be established here.
Elsewhere, combat engineers of the Afghan National Army currently are participating in landmine training with U.S. Army engineers. The three-week training course will improve the skills and competence of the Afghan army engineer detachment allowing them to safely remove landmines from their country, officials said. The Afghan army engineers are in their second week of the intensive three-week program, which stresses realistic, hands-on training.
Also, U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan destroyed an unexploded mortar round near a residential area about five kilometers outside of Forward Operating Base Sharona yesterday. Afghan National Army soldiers secured the site and called on U.S. troops to assist in removing the threat.
We don't want innocent civilians, especially children, to get hurt, so it's important that we get out there as quickly as possible, said Army 1st Lt. Gerard Torres, a platoon leader with the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry, 10th Mountain Division, out of Fort Drum, N.Y. Also, if the enemy gets their hands on it, there's a possibility it could be used against civilians or us in the future.
After retrieving the mortar round, the soldiers placed it in a safe, open area and secured the site while an explosive ordnance disposal team neutralized the explosive.

Ontario arrests part of probe tracking extremists through web: report
Last Updated: Jun 7 2006 11:00 AM EDT
Arrests made under anti-terrorism legislation in Ontario may be part of a bigger international effort to track Islamic extremists communicating through the internet a network purportedly tied to al-Qaeda in Iraq.
A report published in the Times of London on Wednesday alleges a chain of links that connect the network to some of the 17 suspects arrested under Canada's Anti-terrorism Act in Toronto, Mississauga and Pickering on the weekend.
FROM JUNE 7, 2006: Suspect in bomb plot was Canadian soldier
FROM JUNE 6, 2006: Suspect accused of wanting to behead PM, laywer claims
A nine-month investigation, code-named "Operation Mazhar," uncovered a web-based network set up by computer experts in the British capital, the Times said.
They were working with Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian-born militant who leads the group al-Qaeda in Iraq, the paper said.
Quoting security sources in Britain, the Times said extremist cells in Canada, Britain, the United States, Bosnia and Denmark have been using the internet to plot attacks.
Police and intelligence agents in eight countries worked through a "forest" of e-mails and intercepted telephone calls that led to the arrest of up to 30 men, the paper said.
Most of the suspects never met, but were instead recruited via the internet.
Al-Zarqawi trying to recruit Western converts
The Time's report said al-Zarqawi was trying to recruit Western converts to Islam because they would be able to blend in with European and North American populations more easily than his current group of insurgents.
The first arrests in the operation came in Bosnia and Herzegovina in October 2005, with the arrest of an 18-year-old Serb who had converted to Islam. A 20-year-old Dutch-born man, a cache of explosives and a suicide belt were also seized.
Officials say the men were targeting the British Embassy in the capital, Sarajevo.
Within hours of those arrests, British police nabbed three men in London, including a computer expert who had been in touch with the other men.
FBI alleges links between U.S. men and Canadians
The FBI alleges the British cell swapped e-mails with two men in Atlanta, Ga.
Those men, who were arrested in March by FBI agents on terrorism-related charges, are said to have ties with the 17 suspects in Canada.
The 12 men and five youths arrested on June 2-3 in Ontario face charges on terrorism-related activities.
Police allege some of the accused planned to make bombs to attack targets in Ontario. None of the allegations has been proven in court.
The lawyer of one of the suspects said Monday that his client is accused of being part of a plot to storm Parliament, behead the prime minister and attack a number of sites, including the CBC building in Toronto.

A new al-Qaida leader urges death to Americans
By Liz Sly
Chicago Tribune
(snipped)
BAGHDAD, Iraq A man purporting to be al-Qaida's new leader in Iraq made his first appearance on the Internet Thursday, with an audiotape in which he called on Iraq's Sunnis to unite and to each kill an American within the next 15 days . . .
Suicide bombings have become rare since the killing of al-Qaida leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in June appeared to weaken the organization. The purported new al-Qaida leader, identifying himself as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, vowed that attacks will increase against U.S. forces and the country's Shiite majority in the weeks ahead.
"I urge you not to throw down your weapon or give yourself or your enemy a rest until each one of you kills at least one American in a period not exceeding 15 days," he said, speaking in Egyptian-accented Arabic.
The U.S. military had named the new leader of al-Qaida as Abu Ayyub al-Masri, a nom-de-guerre identifying the man only as an Egyptian. But it was impossible to tell whether this was the same man. Because no one has previously spoken as al-Qaida's new leader, it was also impossible to verify the man's claim, but the Web site was routinely used by al-Zarqawi to post audio and video messages to his followers .

Surah 75:7-10
1. I do call to witness the Resurrection Day;
2. And I do call to witness the self-reproaching Spirit.
3. Does man think that We cannot assemble his bones?
4. Nay, We are able to put together in perfect order, the very tip of his fingers.
5. But man wishes to do wrong (even) in the time in front of him.
6. He questions: "When is the Day of Resurrection?"
7. At length, when the sight is dazed
8. And the moon is buried in darkness
9. And the sun and moon are joined together that Day will Man say;
10. "Where is the refuge?"

" . . . Primary Islamic sources reveal that for Muslims the eclipse is yet another sign of impending doom. They are therefore instructed to determine when the eclipse will take place so they might pray throughout its duration as Muhammad did. The Hadith records how the Arabian Prophet himself responded to an eclipse:
Amr b. al-as reported: When the sun eclipsed during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him), they (the people) were called to congregational prayer. The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed two rukus in one rakah. He then stood and observed two rukus in (the second) rakah. The sun then became bright, and Aiisha said: Never did I observe ruku and prostration longer than this (ruku and prostration).[27]"

I think some may actually have been carried out, such as the refinery explosion.

Thanks, Cindy.
His picture reminds me of Johnny Depp.
Entirely possible as that's what I found when looking it up too. ;-)
At $95 per 50ml grenade-shaped bottle, ya wonder.
The description of the scent mentions a strong odor of 'patchouli' (which makes me gag, btw)
Patchouli:
Patchouli (also patchouly or pachouli) is both a plant and an essential oil (patchouli oil) obtained from the leaves of a plant of the same name. The scent of patchouli is heavy and strong, and many people find it offensive. It has been used for centuries in perfumes, and is grown in the East and West Indies. The word derives from the Tamil patchai பச்சை (green), ellai இலை (leaf).(snip)
During the 18th and 19th century silk traders from China travelling to the Middle East packed their silk cloth with dried patchouli leaves to prevent moths from laying their eggs on the cloth.(snip) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patchouli

Shots fired at Dawson College in Montreal
Updated Wed. Sep. 13 2006 1:44 PM ET
CTV.ca News Staff
There are reports that shots have been fired at a downtown Montreal college, and between two and six people have been shot.
CTV's Jed Kahane, reporting from Montreal, said only preliminary reports have been released, and police received a call about the shooting at just before 1 p.m. ET.
Kahane said reports coming in over the police scanner say shots are still being fired and there may be as many as four gunmen involved. Dawson College is located at the corner of Atwater and Sherbrooke in the heart of downtown Montreal.
"I'm just hearing a witness now speaking saying that she was in the college and she saw someone coming down the stairwell with a gun," Kahane told CTV Newsnet.
"They ran back into their classroom and closed the door. The person was apparently chasing someone, and they heard, in her words, at least 20 shots fired, and they stayed inside their classroom until they felt they could get out safely."
A number of officers surrounded the school with guns drawn, while others helped to evacuate students who are still hiding inside the English-language CEGEP school which houses about 10,000 students.
One student told radio station 940 News she saw two people who had been shot, including one who had been hit in the neck.

Excellent summary.
>>The description of the scent mentions a strong odor of 'patchouli' (which makes me gag, btw)<<
Maybe that's why someone left it there? Although, if I paid 95 bucks for a bottle of perfume, I'd be sure I liked the smell of it.
