In the five years since terrorists flew hijacked airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Americans have accepted inconvenience, sacrificed personal liberties and paid billions of dollars for a security clampdown that touches virtually every aspect of their lives.

And we're still not safe.

A close examination of the federal government's homeland security effort shows that there have been major accomplishments since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. But it also reveals how vulnerable the nation remains to catastrophe.

Fifteen days after 9/7 would be "9/22".

Again, there were two "al Masri" tapes yesterday. The first (videotape) was showing Zawahiri's late protege five years ago who helped direct 9/11 as operations chief. The second (audiotape) is from Zawahiri's current protege who was elevated to replace Zarqawi, who himself ran an extensive international network.

The attacks are threatened to occur "in a period not exceeding 15 days".

"Good News Soon" as a "tribute" to "fallen martyrs".

The video released to al Jazeera may have been "top cover" for the audio released on the net.

A new al-Qaida leader urges death to Americans

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A man purporting to be al-Qaida's new leader in Iraq made his first appearance on the Internet Thursday, with an audiotape in which he called on Iraq's Sunnis to unite and to each kill an American within the next 15 days . . .

Suicide bombings have become rare since the killing of al-Qaida leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in June appeared to weaken the organization. The purported new al-Qaida leader, identifying himself as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, vowed that attacks will increase against U.S. forces and the country's Shiite majority in the weeks ahead.

"I urge you not to throw down your weapon or give yourself or your enemy a rest until each one of you kills at least one American in a period not exceeding 15 days," he said, speaking in Egyptian-accented Arabic.

The U.S. military had named the new leader of al-Qaida as Abu Ayyub al-Masri, a nom-de-guerre identifying the man only as an Egyptian. But it was impossible to tell whether this was the same man. Because no one has previously spoken as al-Qaida's new leader, it was also impossible to verify the man's claim, but the Web site was routinely used by al-Zarqawi to post audio and video messages to his followers . . .

In recent communiqués that have received scant attention from Western analysts, the successors of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi at the helm of al-Qaida in Iraq claim to have deployed highly trained explosives teams outside Iraq and state that “good news” is expected to be forthcoming from these terrorist cells very soon.

The messages, posted in Arabic-language Internet chatrooms frequented by al-Qaida representatives and supporters, suggest that initial terrorist forays into Jordan and Lebanon last year by al-Qaida in Iraq were part of a deliberate and continuing strategy of expanding their jihad into Iraq’s susceptible neighbors. . .

Terrorists hoping for ‘good news’

In addition to identifying Abu Nasser as the key player in forming international terrorist cells on behalf of al-Zarqawi, the group’s media spokesmen have added this chilling closer: “Allah willing, perhaps the Lord will enable us to hear good news from them soon.”

The belligerent tone of the communiqués calls into question early optimistic assessments from some observers predicting that the death of al-Zarqawi would cause an ideological collapse among his followers — pushing them to carry out more targeted conventional insurgent attacks and less indiscriminate violence against civilians, particularly foreigners and Shiites.

Taken in the context of the lingering dramatic bloodshed in Baghdad, al-Qaida’s latest threats offer further indications that that al-Zarqawi’s successors are just as intent as he was upon continuing the tsunami of executions, assassinations and suicide bombings, and possibly exporting it far beyond the borders of Iraq.

Osama bin Laden will issue a videotaped message paying tribute to slain al-Qaida in Iraq chief Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a message posted on an Islamic militant Web site said Wednesday. . .

The banner flashed the message, "Good News Soon," followed by a picture of a smiling al-Zarqawi and the words, "A tribute to the martyr of the Islamic nation and prince of the martyrdom-seekers, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, God rest his soul, from Sheik Osama bin Laden, God preserve him." The banner then flashes a picture of bin Laden.

CAIRO, Egypt - Osama bin Laden will address the fight by Islamic militants in Somalia and Iraq in an upcoming Internet message, a Web site said Friday, just hours after the al-Qaida leader released a rare statement that praised the slain Iraq insurgent leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. . .

Bin Laden has not appeared in a video since October 2004 and did not issue any messages in 2005. This year, he has made four audiotapes, part of a stepped-up media campaign by him and his top deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, who has appeared in several videos. . .

Bruce Hoffman, a RAND counterterrorism expert based in Washington, said it may also be that bin Laden is trying to increase the drama of an eventual appearance.

"You do videotape when there's something important," Hoffman said."When bin Laden appears it's something very special. He's as shrewd a showman as they come, and his sense of choreography is very high." . . .

In the audiotape, bin Laden poured praise on al-Zarqawi in rhymed couplets traditional to Islamic poetry, calling him a "lion of Islam" who was "not just an honor to his tribe, his country and his Islamic nation, but to all mankind."

The audiotape narration was part of a 19-minute video showing old footage of al-Zarqawi, in a split screen with an old photo of bin Laden. U.S. intelligence officials believe it is bin Laden's voice, said a counterterrorism official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

White House press secretary Tony Snow said: "It's another bin Laden audio tape. It is what it is." . . .

He issued a message in January warning that his followers were planning a new attack in the United States. But his other three since then have been more focused on commenting on current events, including U.N. plans for a peacekeeping force in Sudan. He issued a message saying Zacarias Moussawi, just convicted in the United States, had nothing to do with the Sept. 11 suicide hijackings. . .

Terror Expert Warns NYC Still a Target

Five years after the attack on the World Trade Center, Islamic extremists - including members of Hezbollah - still view the city as a prime target for another terrorist strike, police say.

The threat "is a permanent condition, and in all likelihood will worsen," the New York Police Department's top counterterrorism official, Richard Falkenrath, told an audience of private security executives Thursday.

"It's a very sobering conclusion and I don't reach it at all happily, but I do think it is true," he said.

The NYPD summoned the executives to offer the terrorism threat assessment and to outline security measures for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said there were no specific threats involving the annual U.N. event opening Sept. 12. But guarding the concentration of world leaders "always is a large undertaking for us," he said. (snip)

Nurse Strangles Intruder With Bare Hands

A nurse returning from work discovered an intruder armed with a hammer in her home and strangled him with her bare hands, police said.

Susan Kuhnhausen, 51, ran to a neighbor's house after the confrontation Wednesday night. Police found the body of Edward Dalton Haffey 59, a convicted felon with a long police record.

Police said there was no obvious sign of forced entry at the house when Kuhnhausen, an emergency room nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center, got home from work shortly after 6 p.m.

Under Oregon law people can use reasonable deadly force when defending themselves against an intruder or burglar in their homes. Kuhnhausen was treated and released for minor injuries at Providence.

Haffey, about 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, had convictions including conspiracy to commit aggravated murder, robbery, drug charges and possession of burglary tools. Neighbors said Kuhnhausen's size - 5-foot-7 and 260 pounds - may have given her an advantage.

"Everyone that I've talked to says 'Hurray for Susan,' said neighbor Annie Warnock, who called 911. "You didn't need to calm her. She's an emergency room nurse. She's used to dealing with crisis."
