Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - September 2006

Posted on 09/01/2006 8:57:29 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Five Years Later, We're Still Not Safe
-Full Story-

In the five years since terrorists flew hijacked airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Americans have accepted inconvenience, sacrificed personal liberties and paid billions of dollars for a security clampdown that touches virtually every aspect of their lives.

And we're still not safe.

A close examination of the federal government's homeland security effort shows that there have been major accomplishments since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. But it also reveals how vulnerable the nation remains to catastrophe.

Explosion near Iraqi church kills 4, wounds 14

The jihad against Iraqi Christians continues. From DPA, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:

BAGHDAD - A car bomb blast near a Christian church in Baghdad on early Sunday killed four civilians and wounded 14 others including four Iraqi policemen, witnesses said.

The explosion, apparently detonated via remote control, occurred while worshippers in the Church of the Virgin Mary attended Sunday mass.

The policemen who were killed were members of a security patrol, employed to guard the church. No information was available as to the condition of the wounded, or whether the church was the primary target of the attack.

Investigation into violence and destroyed churches in Nigerian town continues
Muslim mobs may have responded to Pope’s comments and alleged local insult

By Alex Murashko
Special to ASSIST News Service

DUTSE, NIGERIA (ANS) -- Investigations are still ongoing for arson fires set by Muslim mobs last week in the northern Nigerian town of Dutse. The rioting and fires damaged up to 70 structures, including churches, homes, and Christian businesses, said a Christian Solidarity Worldwide(CSW) leader.

The attacks came when already tense relations between Muslims and Christians in the capital of Jigawa were stressed further by comments made by Pope Benedict XVI during his Regensburg address earlier in the month. Benedict quoted criticism of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad by 14th century Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus.
The Pope has since issued a statement to say that he had never meant to offend Islam. However, demonstrations and violence by some Muslims have been ongoing worldwide.

Nigerian authorities believe the trouble in Dutse was started as the result of a Christian market trader insulting the Prophet Muhammad in the presence of a Muslim customer, according to a BBC news service report.

However, the cause for the rioting and fires may be a combination of the two events -- one international and one local, said Khataza Gondwe, a CSW Advocacy Officer for Sub Saharan Africa.

"Whenever an event occurs internationally to inflame the delicate relations between Muslims and Christians, Christians in vulnerable communities become tense," Gondwe said. "Following the Pope's comments it was almost inevitable that trouble of some sort would break out in Nigeria, given the religiously tinged tension and violence in recent years."

Christian Solidarity Worldwide along with its partners in Nigeria are investigating further this week, trying to get a fuller picture of what happened in Dutse. Currently, the human rights organization is reporting that 10 to 12 churches were burned down, about 40 Christian businesses and 20 homes have been looted and destroyed.

CSW officials have received reports that churches of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria lost at least 12 churches belonging to the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), including the Winners Chapel, Deeper Life Church, Assemblies of God and Calvary Bible Church.

Bishop Kwashi of Jos said in an interview that possibly three churches out of about 15 are still standing in the town. The destroyed churches include three Evangelical Church of West Africa churches and Living Faith church. The Anglican Bishop, Rev Yusufu Lumu, had to seek shelter in a local police station along with his wife and three children when his home was partially destroyed in the violence, according to a CSW release.

Local police authorities said the situation, which began last Tuesday, is now under control. Hundreds of Christians had sought refuge during the week at police headquarters in a predominantly Muslim Nigerian town.

CSW is reporting that police did not respond initially until the violence had subsided. Local representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria visited the town's police station to warn them of a possible outbreak of violence. They asked for the police to deploy to forestall the violence, but the police did not respond.

"The initial reasons for a lack of deployment have yet to be uncovered," Gondwe said. "The governor has said victims will be compensated. We pray that this will indeed occur.

"Christians are rarely, if ever, compensated for their losses in such violence. So far, the victims of the violence in Maiduguri have received no compensation and continue to meet in destroyed churches."

CSW is a human rights organization which specializes in religious freedom, works on behalf of those persecuted for their Christian beliefs and promotes religious liberty for all.

U.S. Soldiers Stop Baghdad Bomber; Iraqi Police Catch Two Killers

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Sept. 26, 2006 – U.S. soldiers stopped a would-be Baghdad bomber in his tracks today, while Iraqi police nabbed two suspected killers during a raid yesterday.
Baghdad-based U.S. soldiers from 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, detained a terrorist after he attempted to place an improvised explosive device in the southwestern part of the city around 1:30 p.m. today.

In Ghazaliyah yesterday, police captured two people suspected of kidnapping and murdering Iraqi citizens. The police seized the two suspects in separate raids without incident.

The detainees allegedly recruited and led members of a terror cell involved in the murder of innocent civilians. No civilians or Iraqi or coalition security forces were injured during the operation.

Also yesterday, terrorists damaged the newly constructed Jurf as Sakhr police station in northern Babil province. The terrorists detonated a mobile car bomb as they attempted to drive into the police compound. Iraqi police and civic leaders had conducted an opening ceremony for the $440,000 facility on Sept. 12.

American soldiers with Company B, 1st Battalion, 67th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, fired at a white two-door sedan and its occupants as the vehicle barreled through the front gates of the police station. At the same time, terrorists attacked several guard towers adjacent to the police station. The vehicle continued toward the station and blew up when it struck the building’s northwest corner.

The blast killed two Iraqi police officers and wounded four. Eight U.S. soldiers on guard duty at the time were wounded. They were treated for minor injuries and returned to duty, officials said. The injured Iraqi police were taken to the Musayyib hospital.

In other news, U.S. soldiers from 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, discovered two weapons caches during an operation west of Baghdad on Sept. 24. The first cache contained seven 125 mm artillery rounds, 45 122 mm mortar rounds, 15 120 mm anti-personnel mines, 11 60 mm mortars, 46 120 mm fuses, 103 rocket-propelled grenades, 100 RPG boosters, six RPG fuses, 15,000 RPK machine gun rounds, and 10 cases of 7.62 mm rounds. The second cache yielded 21 RPG rounds, two 122 mm mortar rounds, a bag of homemade explosives and various bomb-making materials.

As of Sept. 24, Iraqi security forces and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers have cleared about 95,000 buildings, 80 mosques and 65 neighborhoods, detained more than 125 terrorist suspects, seized more than 1,600 weapons, registered more than 750 weapons and found 37 weapons caches in support of Operation Together Forward. The combined forces also have removed more than 186,000 cubic meters of trash from the streets of Baghdad.

Elsewhere, U.S. soldiers defeated a terrorist attack and took the terrorists’ weapons during an engagement that occurred south of Baghdad on Sept 23.

Terrorists attacked the 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, soldiers with rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and small-arms fire. The soldiers returned fire and disabled the terrorists’ vehicle.

Four terrorists fled the battle and ran into a nearby palm grove. Soldiers investigating the scene discovered a dead terrorist and weapons inside the vehicle. The seized contraband included three rifles, a rocket-propelled-grenade launcher, two RPG rounds, a rocket, and 10 ammo magazines suitable for use with an AK-47 rifle.

Tamil Tigers suspect released on bail

TORONTO -- After more than a month in custody, Tamil Tiger suspect Piratheepan Nadarajah has been released on nearly $750,000 bail.

"My client feels extremely relieved. It's been an extremely difficult situation for him," said David Berg, a Toronto lawyer who represents Nadarajah.

"He's gratified that his family, friends and employer all came to his assistance."

Nadarajah, 30, of Brampton, Ont., still faces extradition to the United States on terrorism charges. U.S. court documents allege he is a "scientist" and a technical expert who intentionally conspired to provide material support to the Tamil Tigers, formally known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The LTTE is listed as a terrorist group in the U.S. and Canada.

He was arrested Aug. 23 after a joint RCMP-FBI investigation and is among 11 people in both countries arrested in the case.

American authorities allege Nadarajah tried to travel across the Canada-U.S. border in the Niagara, Ont. area on Aug. 18 with three other suspects. It's alleged they were on their way to buy weapons in Long Island, N.Y.(snip)

It was just a package of clothing....that area has a lot of homeless people living nearby.

One wonders what sets off the bomb sniffing dogs in cases like these, though.

My fear is that there are so many false alarms, that one day our attitude about these packages may become "ho-hum".

That will be a mistake.

It appears that the live webcam in the previous post, is not going to stay live. They just went back to regular broadcasting for now.

The newscaster said that they had crews on the way to the scene so I would imagine that the webcam could become active again.

As in most breaking news situations, the reports are sketchy at this time. However, the authorities say that shots have been fired and that they think there is just one man, who is armed, inside the school holding someone hostage. Oh, also the "intruder" says that he has a bomb.

Hopefully more news will be forthcoming

"A Speech by Abu Omar al-Saif Addressing the Mujahideen in Iraq"
By SITE Institute
September 27, 2005

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A 20:13 minute audio speech allegedly voiced by Muhammad Abu Omar al-Saif, a Saudi scholar who has been affiliated with al-Qaeda leadership in Chechnya, was issued yesterday, September 26, 2005 to password-protected al-Qaeda affiliated forums. Saif focuses his oration upon the mujahideen in Iraq, and speaks at length about the imminent danger of democracy in Iraq vis-à-vis Islamic shari’a, and the belief that it is incumbent upon the mujahideen in Iraq to amalgamate into a unified body and appoint an Imam, parallel to the “crusaders and the renegade sects - have united their ranks and agreed to establish an infidel democratic government in Iraq.”

CHECHNYA WEEKLY

"ABU OMAR AL-SAIF: HIS LIFE AND AFTER HIS DEATH"
By Murad Al-shishani

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The announcement of the killing of Abu Omar al-Saif, "the mufti of Arab fighters in Chechnya", on December 12, 2005, shed light on the movement's future and its presence in Chechnya. While the Russian government did not deny or confirm the news until December 16, 2005, Arab newspapers and forums covered the incident and published details on Abu al-Saif's life that correspond to a large degree with what was published in Jamestown's Terrorism Monitor on April 23, 2004 (Volume 2, Issue 8). The surprise was that qoqaz.com, the Chechen Arab fighters' website, came back online with news about al-Saif's killing, so much so that his brother said that "he learned about the his brother's killing from several parties, but became sure of it when he saw it on the Arab fighters in Chechnya's official website" (Al-Hayat, December 11, 2005)."
