I am not a bad cook at all, but I must admit I can't get cornbread down very well.
Sweet would seem even stranger to me at least non sweet I could relate it to Yorkshire Pudding but it was like eating non sweet maderia cake with gravy just seemed the wrong texture to have with a meal.
I will try it again and maybe just put a little sugar in to bring out more flavour.
Here's one Sweet Cornbread Recipe

Sweet Cornbread
From Carroll Pellegrinelli
From The Cornbread Book
by Jeremy Jackson, 2003
1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1-cup cornmeal
5 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2-teaspoon salt
1-cup milk
1/3-cup canola oil
1 large egg, slightly beaten
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Lightly grease and 8 or 9-inch square pan.
Sift dry ingredients into mixing bowl. Form a well in the mixture and add the milk, oil, and egg. Stir just until everything is combined there should still be scattered clumps of flour, about the size of baby peas or BBs.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 24 to 30 minutes, until the cornbread is starting to brown slightly (especially at the edges) and a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.
I just printed out this recipe....it looks so good...what kind of apples do you recommend?
Howdy Mike..
Congratulations, and nice choice of photo for your toaster. Are you recovered from your whirlwind tour of DC?
They look the same as what we have but we tend only to eat them when we go out for a meal at a restaurant no many people serve them at home unless they are entertaining.
They may have bread and butter with a meal such as a salad.
I've flown into Salt Lake City -- it's a cool city, visually, to fly into and out of.
Oh, I see. I don't know how an Amish recipe would be. I don't care for sweet cornbread. I like it as the bread of choice with dried peas, beans, fresh vegetables of any kind. I love it just to split and toast under the broiler and put honey on it. When I was a child, when I stayed with my grandparents, cornbread crumbled into buttermilk and sweetened with a bit of sugar was our supper before bedtime. The big meal was at lunch time.
I'm loving watching AF1 coming into Salt Lake. Love the music that's playing at the airport! Love the TV reporters not dissing W.
We tend to eat rolls at lunch time with cheese, ham, corn beef, tuna etc in them.
Most British lunch boxes will contain 2 rolls with some sort of filling, a chocolate biscuit (cookie) and a packet of crisps (potato chips).
We have normal sweet corn and probably in a speciality shop in a main city you might get the creamed type.
Applesauce in cake seems strange to me but I suppose it is no different really than using fruit or jam in a cake.
As some of you know, I just got back from my first-ever vacation. Being the law and politics guru I am, I chose DC.
I flew into Reagan and got settled at the Hotel Rouge (great place by the way and very nice staff) late on Thursday afternoon. I wanted to get a little sightseeing done, even though everything was about to close, so I quickly shoved half a can of Pringles into my mouth, washed it down with a Nantucket Nectar OJ, grabbed a map, and headed down Sixteenth Street.
Sixteenth Street ends at Lafayette Park, so the first two things I saw, aptly enough, were Dubya's most likely haunts, the White House and St. John's, which we see so often on Sunday Doses.
I also walked a ways down 15th St. and saw the Washington Monument. My brother called just as I was ready to snap a shot of it to ask if I had seen it yet. I said, "Yeah, I'm standing in front of it!"
I also got some great photos of the World War II Memorial.
In this one, you can see the Lincoln Memorial in the background.
I saw the speech live so I am just guessing.
OMG! What a great news coverage in Utah, makes me want to move there! Thanks!
My pleasure Mike hope you and the family are keeping well.

The whole video is just AWESOME! I'm particularly happy that the President got the opportunity to 'feel the love' from his supporters -- he needs this every once in awhile to help mitigate against the constant hate from the left!!!
Applesauce/Spice cake is one of my favs....especially with vanilla/cream cheese frosting....
