California takes lead in global warming fight

Aug 30, 11:06 PM (ET)

By Mary Milliken

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - California catapulted to the forefront of U.S. efforts to fight global warming on Wednesday with an accord that will give the state the toughest laws in the nation on cutting greenhouse gas emissions and possibly spur a reluctant Washington to take similar action.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has accused fellow Republican President George W. Bush of failing to demonstrate leadership on climate change, said he reached a "historic agreement" with Democrats to make California a world leader in reducing carbon emissions.

"The success of our system will be an example for other states and nations to follow as the fight against climate change continues," Schwarzenegger said in a statement after weeks of tense negotiations.

The bill now seems certain to win approval this week in a vote in the state Senate and Assembly, where Democrats hold majorities. Thursday is the last day of the legislative session ahead of November elections.

Despite opposition from within his own party, Schwarzenegger was expected to support the bill since he has made much of his environmental record in his reelection bid.

Green policies are popular among voters in environment-savvy California, the world's eighth-largest economy and 12th largest producer of greenhouse gas emissions.

California's Global Warming Solutions Act aims to cut emissions to 1990 levels, or around 25 percent, by 2020 with an enforceable cap and mandatory reporting for top polluters like energy companies.

I expect California's economy to shut down within a couple of years. There's no way the caps can be met by 2020. By then, the Governor and all the doofuses in the State Legislature who reached this "historic accord" will be long out of office.

Environment-savvy. Not science-savvy or economy-savvy, but environment-savvy. Oh, brother.

Don't bet on it.

The economy might not collapse, but it will eliminate middle class jobs. There will be lots of wealthy and poor people, but the middle class will be driven out.

If California wanted to help the economic environment they would promote the building of a couple of refineries and a couple of nuclear power plants instead of being hostile to business and industry. The only industry booming in CA is porn and the going businesses is nail salons and exercise studios.

Maybe they'll repeal the limits after they get burned. I wouldn't bet the farm on people wising up - they don't call this state the land of fruits, flakes and nuts for nothing. There are too many brain-dead liberals here.

There's been a mass exodus from CA for a long time. When I went back home to CO 25 years ago, everyone was bitching about the mass immigration from CA.

California can keep it's system and send us it's oil. And don't ask for help with electricity. That would force some other state to go outside the California green zone and I know they wouldn't want that to happen.

Silicon Valley is the big winner. It doesn't produce emitting pollutants that contribute to global warming. As a matter of fact, the biggest boosters of this nefarious scheme are venture capitalists.

Do you have a computer? Do you eat produce? Where do you think they came from? This kind of crap is bad enough without having to deal with idiotic statements like the above.

I would love to see the California economy crash into oblivion during the short-run, might knock some common sense into them.

Why pay California level wages to video cameramen and technicians when there's much cheaper labor available in overseas? There's plenty of on camera "talent" available in eastern Europe.
