UN Denounces Israel Cluster Bombs

UN denounces Israel cluster bombs

The UN's humanitarian chief has accused Israel of "completely immoral" use of cluster bombs in Lebanon. UN clearance experts had so far found 100,000 unexploded cluster bomblets at 359 separate sites, Jan Egeland said.

"Ninety per cent of the cluster bomb strikes occurred in the last 72 hours of the conflict, when we knew there would be a resolution," he said.

Israel has previously said that munitions it uses in conflict comply with international law.

Earlier estimates from UN experts had suggested a total of about 100 cluster bomb sites.

Mr Egeland described the fresh statistics as "shocking new information".

"Cluster bombs have affected large areas - lots of homes, lots of farmland," Mr Egeland said.

He added: "They will be with us for many months, possibly years. Every day, people are maimed, wounded and killed by these weapons. It shouldn't have happened."

Mr Egeland said his information had come from the UN Mine Action Co-ordination Centre, which had undertaken assessments of nearly 85% of the bombed areas in Lebanon.

"It shouldn't have happened."

Hezbollah shouldn't have attacked Israel and then randomly rained rockets on civilian targets with anti-personnel explosives.

That's okay though, it was just Jews that were killed by the rockets.

Maybe the UN is concerned that those unexploded shells might fall into the hands of terrorists that will then use them against Israel? Perhaps?

Don't notice much UN outrage over the fact that Hezbollah warheads were packed with ball bearings designed to shred human flesh at 200 yeards. Or that suicide bombers regularly pack their charges with nails smeared with rat poison and Aids-tainted blood packets. Guess whatever maims and kills Zionists is OK.

But not a freaking word about Hezzbollah's missles filled with ball bearings so they act as oversized shotgun shells directed at civilians.

To hell with the UN.

What's outrageous is the failure rate. Why didn't these all go off? Some raghead is living now when they shouldn't be.

When the Soviets were dropping cluster bombs with bomblets that looked like toys over Afghanistan in the 80's, what did the UN have to say?

(crickets)

Why didn't these all go off?

They only detonate when there is a requisite number of women and children present.

This is pure BS. The failure rate on the bomblets is very small, and not that many CBU's were dropped in the first place. The 100K figure is clear off the scale of truth and reality.

Boo Frikin Hoo

IMHO Israel would be justified in heavily mining 10~20 miles into Lebanon to keep the little Hitlers at bay.

I agree. That's the important question!

Some types are "area denial" munitions that aren't supposed to go off until somebody/ something steps on, drives over, or otherwise disturbs them. (or so I've been told)

The "BLUSTER BOMBS" of the U N's 'Coughing Anus' have caused a 1000 times the death/injuries of the Israeli ones...Nuff Said....

Maybe, maybe not. Where are the unexploded bomblets concentrated? Could they deny use of an area previously used by hezbollah for rocket launches?

They have a inherently high failure rate. It is not because they are duds, but more about what and how they impact. You can't control this aspect. It's the same as the survival rate of a large hailstone. Many of them break, but many survive for unknown reasons and weird impacts..

Also, the munitions were pretty old, as I understand.
