BRIDGEPORT, Conn. --A Fairfield lawyer has been charged with stabbing his neighbor to death after learning the man had molested his 2-year-old daughter, police said.

Fairfield authorities said attorney Jonathon Edington leaped through 58-year-old Barry James' bedroom window Monday and stabbed him nearly a dozen times in the chest. Edington, 29, was arraigned on murder and burglary charges Tuesday in Bridgeport Superior Court. He was held on $1 million bond and is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 12.

Thanks for posting that article link. That makes it much clearer as far as how much time elapsed between finding out and acting upon the information. Still not excusable behavior, but more easily understood.

Thanks, and it's all good. It's important to talk about these things I think...

As far as capital punishment for child predators, there was just a law passed in Oklahoma where repeat molesters can be sentenced to death. It sounds good on its face, but the unintended consequences from this law are in my opinion not good at all. Imagine a child whose parent is the molester and the kid feeling like it is their fault their parent is dead cause they told... bad stuff all around.

Anyway, it's a horrible thing for anyone to have to face and one definitely feels for this man (the father), despite his "temporary bad judgement".

Reminds of the case where the man laid in wait at an airport for the man who killed his child as the murdere was escorted by police to another state.

This is a case for pure jury nulification. HOWEVER the prosecutor will tryin and intimidate a settlment.

Prosecutors are gaming for a plea bargain.

The government does not like "self help" it exposes the weakness of the state.

Now the ACLU will civily sue the attorney. The fact of the matters is a child's death is temporary insanity.

One can only hope that what he learned was true.

If it is true, the kid was molested. I hope the kid wasn't molested. I also hope the dad was justified in what he did. Real catch-22 situation.

Thanks for the prayers, they are definitely appreciated. Our case did go through the court system, although we were dealing with juvenile offenders so it was a much different situation. I have often said that if the perpetrators were older I would have had a lot more anger towards them. Seeing as they were younger I have a lot of anger toward whatever adult taught these kids that their behavior was OK (I think the perpetrators were abused themselves in our case although the boy wouldn't admit to being hurt or anything (not surprising).

Since our case was very out of the ordinary I think the prosecutors and police really put their hearts into making sure things went to our satisfaction. I was more interested in the kids getting the help they needed to understand why they were in so much trouble than seeing them suffer, although they will be on a sexual predator list for the rest of their lives which I think is a great thing... It's like eternal probation that can't be taken off their records when they reach 18 like in other crimes.

At any rate we are all doing well now, thank the Lord. This all happened almost 8 years ago. Although we still deal with things on occasion one thing that has helped is that I myself am a survivor, so I'm able to really relate to my daughters and what they are going through and that has helped them tremendously. I also know that this isn't like a "death sentence" and with love and understanding one can really heal pretty well. Of course, there are "issues" they and I will probably always have - but who doesn't have any issues or "baggage", ya know? (o: The times when you see the most damage done is when the victim of these crimes keeps the secret for a long time.

I was greatful to have spoken to my daughters about these things before the incident, and so they came to us immediately after it happened -- I think that did more for their getting through it than anything else. I can't stress enough how important it is to talk to your children and let them know that 1.) perpetrators will lie and try to scare you out of telling (they told my daughters that they would hurt my husband and I if they told...) and 2.) it is never their fault, and no-one will be angry at them for it happening.

Thanks for listening to me ramble. I hope my insights can help others if, God forbid, anyone else finds themselves in this position.

That's a good point you bring up... I'm wondering if the Mom perhaps caught the guy, or if he came into their yard or something. I'm sure as this case gets further along these things will come out, as someone else mentioned earlier...

I will give that the sober contemplation it merits. And then I'll find something else to do with the other 14 minutes of the quarter-hour.

How can they blame him if the guy continually thrust himself into the knife? At least that would be my take on it if I were on the jury.

If a parent could be confident that the pedophile would be punished immediately and removed permanently from society these type things wouldn't happen.

And if a frog had wings he wouldn't bump his ass from hopping.

An accused pedophile is entitled to a fair trial like anyone else. I know the parents go through hell, but that isn't an excuse to cut corners. Anyone can make an accusation -- I could accuse you now. Would that make it okay for your neighbor to stab you in your bed?

It's not justifiable homicide,

Some people just need killing.

I would never vote to convict this guy.

Cool. I'm sure that if a stranger murders someone you love and claims that your loved one was molesting an infant, you'd support them in their trial, too. After all, the accusation is all that matters. The story notes that he was acting on a mere belief, "whether it was true or not".

Not guilty.

And if his belief was mistaken, or if it was intentionally created by another person?

But I guess that doesn't matter. We all need our 3-Minute Hate this morning. Orwell would be proud of us.

Yes...the headline (or, rather, the commentary to the headline) for this thread is quite misleading. The lawyer/father accused of murdering his neighbor did not "learn that the man had molested his young daughter." He was told, by his wife, that the man was molesting their daughter. Nothing yet has been reported as to where the wife received this information.

Who knows...maybe the deceased and the lawyer's wife were having an affair and the deceased tried to break it off, so the lawyer's wife accused him of molesting the daughter just to see the deceased get arrested.

That, of course, is just speculation. I'm not basing that speculation on any facts or evidence - just like everyone else here ready to acquit the lawyer.
