TS/Hurricane/TS Ernesto
NWS/NHC ^ | 28 August 2006 | NHC

Posted on 08/28/2006 7:27:21 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Florida Governor Jeb Bush ordered a state of emergency in advance of Ernesto's anticipated Florida landfall as a hurricane. During his press briefing, Governor Bush emphasized the need to, "Have your family plan in place. Be prepared to be on your own for 72 hours. I know it sounds like a broken record." Jeb then repeated his message in Spanish.

All of the South Florida peninsula and Keys are under a hurricane watch, and portions of the watch areas may be upgraded to hurricane warnings later today.

NASA is moving Space Shuttle Atlantis from the launch pad back to its protective hangar, with the launch postponed until at least Sept. 7-8.

Hurricane Ernesto was downgraded to Tropical Storm status after battering Haiti and the Dominican Republic all day Sunday. The death toll in Haiti from Ernesto currently stands at 1 person; storm reports from Hispaniola are scarce this morning.

Ernesto has approached the eastern portion of Cuba, where the government issued a hurricane warning for six provinces, tourists were evacuated, and baseball games were played earlier Sunday than originally scheduled.

I just came from an afternoon of gas lines here in Miami. I had to fill up the cans for the generator and my hubby is stuck at work so I got his car and then sat in another gas line.

Oh, and the traffic is terrible too. I called my boss (because I'm out on "sales calls" this afternoon), and asked him about tomorrow. Business as usual, come in in the morning. What!?!

Thank you for that tidbit. I've got a (vacant, for sale) waterfront condo up in Aventura. I don't want no frippin damage that I have to drive down there to fix!

Maybe you are right. Ignoring the Panhandle, I thought it averaged 100 miles wide with some variations.

Yeah, this thing is going to pick up a ton of moisture after it exits Florida and before it hits the Carolinas. And it's likely to be slow moving, so even though it probably won't become a powerful hurricane, it could be a huge rainmaker.

I think I'd bet on a Labor Day washout.

Dry air is our ally........hope it does the job of keeping "Ernesto" weak as can be expected.

I hope this thing doesn't pull a Hugo. What worries me is the amount of time it might spend over the gulf stream. It could intensify rapidly before hitting the Carolina coast.

We filled up last night but I was running a last minute errand just a while ago and the gas lines were unreal, plus some stations were already out of gas

Damn, what are they gonna overkill now?

Actually, the more I think of it, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see the media start heading down to the Keys to look for tourists who were ordered to evacuate, and encourage them to start whining about how Jeb Bush overreacted to cover George's tail, and destroyed the dream vacations of their lives.

Yes, they are that venal and hypocritical. They're going to be out for blood.

Only time will tell what becomes of "Ernesto" and the effect he has in store, if any, the guessing and waiting game continues.......

Why? The only reason anyone has bastardi on their show is for ratings...folks will tune in to hear his outlandish ravings....the more I hear him the more I think the guy is just another moonbat.

"What an Idiot"

Bastardi, does like to hype, but this Northwest Atlantic Visible loop definitely shows Ernesto gathering it back in.

My concern now would be just how much it is pushing west, it just may hug Cuba's coast too much to intensify. If it does start reaching northerly more though, well just in the last two hours it already bloomed a pretty good cluster of storms, who knows?

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/nwatl/loop-vis.html

Cat 2 probably not, strong cat 1 not out of the question if this burst continues.
