But for all his achievements, the moment that thrust him into the national spotlight this month came when Sen. George Allen (R-Va.) called him "macaca." ...

I believe the lowdown on this is in a story on the young man in today's editions of "The Washington Post." Style Section.

80 kids submitted essays to Sabato - only 20 were selected for the class. The "Macaca" phrase got the kid into the class, according to the Post.

The story also says the young man is a very good student.

It's the politics of personal destruction at work.

But .. these are the same people who call Bush "Hitler" along with many other unflattering names like "idiot", etc., without giving it a second thought!

The dems are making a mountain out of a mole hill (as usual) .. and this attack upon Allen tells me the dems are terrified of Allen's prospects of running in 2008. The dems are trying to taint him now .. to try to intimidate him into quitting the race for 2008.

Yeah...I would like to know what this 'Macaca' kid did to attract attention to himself at Allen's political events. Allen is not going to single out anyone for redicule unless they have somehow sought that attention.

Here's a qeustion for the linguists at the Post. What's the plural of macaca? Is it macacas or macaci or macacae? And where can I find a definition of macaca as a slur other than an entry in Wikipedia, put there on 17Aug06? And where exactly is the citation for that reference?

Sure. Sabato has a special class that requires students to write an essay in order to gain entrance to it. According to the story, 80 students submitted essays - only 20 were selected. Sidarth was accepted. His essay read "I am Macaca."
