DURHAM, N.C. On March 21, a week after an African-American woman charged that she had been raped by three white Duke University lacrosse players, the police sergeant supervising the investigation met with the sexual-assault nurse who had examined the woman in the emergency room. The sergeant, Mark D. Gottlieb, reviewed the medical report, which did not say much: some swelling, no visible bruises.

Do you believe she stole a cab?
Do you believe she led police on a high speed chase?
Do you believe she was drunk?
I believe all 3 so have no doubt in my mind she almost hit an officer.
I read the links posted here and feel that no one would have been killed at IHOP if a) they paid their bill and b) stopped when the officer told them to stop.

If you don't kiss their collective ass, they assume the right to destroy you.
The alledged rape and everything growing from that is an explosive story, no doubt.
But the bigger story is the corruption. Durham is corrupt to the core.
I'm at the point now where I think let the lawyers take care of the boys. They have good lawyers. The bigger battle is against the corruption.
Gottlieb tried to bring the Duke cops into the collective bargaining unit. Duke was not too crazy about that. Gottlieb lost that battle.
This is not the first Duke incident he has investigated.
He depises Duke. He does not care about AV's claim of rape. He does not care about Nifong's case. He does not give a flying f___ about the guilt or innocence of the lax players.
He wants to shove it up Duke's ass. In fact, Nifong might even been his dupe at first. Gottlieb might know where the bodies are buried (so to speak) and may have threatened to dig up a few graves.
And what is going on at NCCU? Brian Taylor, the pimp, driving Ms Medina. How is it that a known pimp is ignored by the local media?
The press, the cops, even the administration at NCCU have given him cover. Someone is protecting him and it is a group effort.
And while av's peers are pissing and moaning about the sexual degradation of one of their own by the rich white boys, the poor black boys are pimping their sustahs.
There has to be a common element in the DPD, city government and NCCU. They are all corrupt, but I want to know who the dirty one is.
That's the big story. The lax boys are in good hands. But unless the bigger story is exposed nothing in Durham will change.
It's about organized crime, drugs and prostitution. Someone is getting rich off of it.

Depression and bi-polar would affect her mental acuity, which is the defense's point, but that has zero to do with knowing right from wrong as you claim, which was my point.

I think it's evident where you're coming from, peaceful community notwithstanding. You happily excuse an amoral whore for trying to run down a cop, stealing a car that represents someone's livelihood and driving at high speeds through two counties while she's three sheets to the wind, ebdangering an untold number of innocent lives, but you think a cop who shoots in self-defense should be strung up.
That sounds like a cop-hating anarchist to me.

Being certified as nuts, as in not knowing right from wrong, is what I was referring to. Bi-polar people know right from wrong as well as anybody else. When they're on a high cycle, they make bad choices and abandon varying degress of restraint, but you are wrong or misled if you think that means they don't know right from wrong.

When some bi-polar people are on a high cycle, they exhibit paranoid features. Not all of them do, but some do, especially if they use drugs when they're cycling a high.
Lying and fabricating stories doesn't mean someone doesn't know right from wrong. It means they're a liar. I don't think Mangum fabricated the rape because she's bi-polar; I think she fabricated it to avoid arrest. She may have abandoned restraint and gotten high as a result of swinging into a high cycle, but that has nothing to do with right and wrong anymore than a drunk doesn't know it's wrong to drive while drunk, but does it anyway, no matter how many times they've been caught. They're self-centered people who don't give a damn about anybody else, and most of them are chronic liars who choose not to manage their condition.
They're all culpable for their acts unless they've been certified as psychotic - nuts.

A hoot is right! It's like a little third world dictatorship shithole right here in the good ol' USA.
I don't blame Target a bit for not answering the NAACP survey. No matter what they answer, they'll get sued. They're smart not to answer. The survey is a sucker-punch waiting to land on the jaws of Target shareholders.
If the NAACP in Durham wants to target Target with a boycott, then target can close its doors, open up somewhere else, leaving Durham without those jobs, one less good store for Durhamites, and taking the money they put back into the local community from every sale. Go ahead, Durham, shoot yourself in the foot again.

The point is that they know right from wrong. Being bi=polar isn't an excuse for bad behavior. It explains it, but it doesn't excuse it.

It's pretty much a no-brainer, but some people will grab onto anything to excuse this horrible woman.

Q: Why could Christ not have been born in Chapel Hill?
A" 'Cause God couldn't find three wise men and a virgin.
To: Jezebelle
We just dropped off my son at college, In a presentation by his adviser to a group of parents, she was remarked that the campus is very safe and that she does not lock her on-campus house or her car. She then went on to comment that the nine years she lived in Durham she locked everything all the time. My wife and I just snickered.
To: Locomotive Breath
Durham sounds like a really rough town with not much going for it except Duke, and look how Durhamites have demonized Duke.

Durham's attitude is if at first (or second or third, etc.) we don't succeed, at least we can damage someone who does succeed.
