Bush is completely inconsistent with regards to embryonic life. He vetoes federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, yet allows this abortifacient to be approved.

Yeah... approving a pill that prevents pregnancy is much worse than abortions!! [/sarc]

You would think that the feminists would be gathering their vats of tar and feathers on this one too, regardless of their stand on abortions. This medication is too dangerous to be offered without medical supervision. This one is bad for everyone, but as you mention, especially for embryos (which is to say, unborn babies).

It's about preventing pregnancy not aborting babies.

That's a bit of an apples and orange juice comparison.

One does wonder if USPS allows this particular pill to be sent out as in mail-order medical shipments?

That'd be one place to stop it ~ citing the law that prohibits federal funds and resources being used for purposes of abortion.

Does anyone know how these pills will be dispensed/monitored?

It seems like selling them to women only is like selling condoms to men only.

I can hear the cries now.... "It's a small town, her father is the pharmacist, she was too embarrassed. Men must be able to make these purchases for their wives/girlfriends/one-night-stands."

When that happens it seems like it'd make it a lot easier for men to hide sexual abuse by buying these pills and forcing their victims to take them.

Once again, the evidence is good that the Plan B progesterone-only morning after pills only work before
ovulation during a narrow five-day range and they do not prevent implantation after fertilization - there's a good chance that the progesterone increases the implantation rate of any embryos begun after ovulation.

Just look at the information from this natural planning information website:
http://www.woomb.org/bom/science/physiology.html
See Figure 1
In fact, we give progesterone to protect early pregnancies. In natural cycles, progesterone increases after ovulation.

The most significant are the studies from Brazil by Croxatto and his group (H.B. Croxatto et al. / Contraception 70 (2004) 442–450)," which was a blind study, cycling women who were otherwise unable to get pregnant (sterilized or with - what I consider unethical and potentially abortifacient - IUD's) through 3 courses - placebo, and two forms of progesterone-only pills. The researchers followed the women with serial ultrasound and hormonal blood essays.

There is a study by Durand, et.al. (M. Durand et al. / Contraception 71 (2005) 451– 457), from 2001 which tested surgically sterilized women given 2 doses of Levonorgestrel, 12 hours apart. These women were studied by serial ultrasounds and women who ovulated also underwent endometrial biopsy.

There was no difference in their uterine lining function or anatomy although there was a difference in the expression of glycodelin-A. This protein prevents binding of the sperm to the zona pellucida of the oocyte and so, prevents fertilization. (There is some speculation that the protein acts to help implantation, too.)

Theres a difference between allowing something, and federally funding it.

If it's dangerous, its dangerous. I for one don't care, Barr will just be slapped with the lawsuit card.

As though every 14 year old won't have access to Plan B. It's a sad day for Planned Parenthood and other abortion mills.

Not being qualified as a doctor or scientist, I'm unable to comment on the medical complexities of this issue.

I do know one thing, however. No matter which side is correct, the pill will be viewed right off the bat by most of the conservative base as a tool FOR abortion. Few minds will ever be changed.

I'm afraid that the social Right vote is largely down the drain for the Republicans in the next election. They'll just stay home.

Is there any conservative or Republican group remaining that hasn't been squandered by this administration? The anti-immigration voters?....... the fiscal restraint voters?.......those opposed to the McCain campaign finance "reform" bill?........the pandering to the Katrina Korps?.......rescuing Hezzbollah?......billions for AIDS in Africa and more for rebuilding Lebanon when it may be knocked down again or controlled by a terrorist administration?......

I'm really grumped out this morning.....just shaking my head at strange national policy at play.

The Republican timing on this pill issue is impeccable.....as usual.

Pharmaceutical companies are the richest companies in the world. Bush must be getting paid off by them. How else can you explain his inconsistencies.

It's not an abortion pill.
It is a contraceptive.
It is already legally available via prescription.
This is only a status change to OTC from prescription, and only for adults.

Get your facts.

If you are anti-contraceptive (Catholic etc.) then opposition to this change would be consistent and I have nothing further to offer.

However, if you are OK with contraception via birth control pills then opposition to this pill represents an uneducated and inconsistent position.

Before 'Plan B' even came to market many (and I do mean many - a lot) of doctors would prescribe a triple to quadruple dose of normal and readily available contraceptive for female patients reporting a sexual assault or a high risk (unprotected) encounter. From that practice evolved a single pill for that specific case - 'Plan B'. Even in the age of 'Plan B' many doctors still use the 'old' method of 3-4 pills of normal contraceptive.

Plan B does not coase an abortion.
It will not terminate a preganancy.

Many people have Plan-B confused with RU486. They are not the same thing. Please educate yourselves - and then, once educated, please feel free to rant away in a semi-intelligent manner.

.
Please note: I use 'you' in the general sense, not the specific. I intend no personal slights.
