WARWICK, R.I. Senator Lincoln Chafee and Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey will meet tonight in their first televised debate. The two Republicans have sparred over taxes, immigration, national security and personal character during radio debates held during the past two weeks.

They are scheduled to appear tonight before a live audience at Toll Gate High School in Warwick, where Chafee once served as mayor.

The candidates face each other in the September 12th Republican primary. The race has gained national attention as Republican leaders consider Chafee's seat crucial in keeping their slim majority in the Senate.

The winner of the Republican primary will likely face Democratic former Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse in November.

You can watch the debate on WPRI starting at 8PM, and also right here live, on our wpri.com

I hope Laffey cleans his clock. Chafee is the worst kind of RINO. I'd happily give this seat to a dem either way, but I also think that Chafee will actually lose in November if he wins the primary. At least with Laffey there's a chance.

The candidates face each other in the September 12th Republican primary. The race has gained national attention as Republican leaders consider Chafee's seat crucial in keeping their slim majority in the Senate.

If Chafee is the difference maker between being the Majority and being the Minority, he'll pull a Jeffords. And everyone knows it. Except the GOP Establishment that is constantly surprised when the Liberals don't honor their word.

They have wasted their donors money by fighting for this seat, when they could have been fighting for a pickup elsewhere. And it's why the Senatorial committee doesn't deserve to be funded. Chafee isn't even good enough to be compared to Collins or Snowe, who at least hang on the inside of the dividing line between Dem and Rep.

Send the Liberals in the GOP that have spent the last two years screwing everything up, resulting in approval ratings plummeting, a message. Big Tent? Maybe. But they aren't the majority voice and they should honor that. Not try to kick conservatives and their policies out. Which is what they've done. Insist on Liberalism or nothing at all.

Vote Laffey.

"And Senator Lincoln Chaffee held the audience spellbound as he unleashed a point by point rebuttal to the challenger on every issue, reinforced by a detailed and documented recitation of his many accomplishments in the United States Senate, representing the good people of Rhode Island."

"Oh wait, the audience isn't spellbound, half of them are snoring, and the other half are paralyzed from excessive spasms of laughter, oh! oh! OH the humanity!"

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has endorsed and funded Chafee and the NRSC filed an FEC complaint against Laffey.

Chafee has a lifetime 37% conservative voting record and a 12% conservative voting record for 2005 according to the American Conservative Union. No Republican in the Senate is worse.

NRSC obviously is supporting the man they believe will give "Republicans" the greater chance of a seat in the Senate. They are probably correct. It is not their job to support a "conservative". If we (meaning RI Republicans) want a more conservative senator, it is those voters' job to choose a more conservative candidate in the primary.

If Laffey wins the primary, he is highly unlikely to win the general election, but in the case of Chaffee, I, as a CONSERVATIVE not a Republican, would be willing in this case to give up his Senate seat.

NOTE: this is the ONLY 'R' Senate seat I would be willing to give up as a conservative, despite the RINO behavior of several other R Senators- there is none nearly as bad as Chaffee.

Kudos to your post. Chafee is a total joke.

If he beats Laffey in the primary I hope the Dim wins. Seriously. Flame away RNC groupies.

Don't you know that if Chaffee loses, the media will be quick to spin it as the Republican version of Lamont/Lieberman. Heck, I saw one of the Big Three trying to do it shortly before the CT primary.

I think AP? actually was caught running a story about Chafee's defeat and had to withdraw it. LOL

But, really, they've already tried to spin Murkowski losing in Alaska and the incumbent Congressman that went down to a conservative. Neither one of those have stuck.

One could argue that's because they aren't big names outside of their geographical areas.

Okay, true enough. Chafee has more name recognition then they do. Though nothing near leiberman. And when people do recognize him, they recognize him as the Liberal Republicans that always bashes Republicans.

Whereas, they recognize Lieberman as the Democrat Vice presidential candidate in 2000 that most of them liked more then Gore and Bush. I still remember how most people I spoke to, myself included, actually liked Leiberman and Cheney more in 2000 after the debates and a lot of people ventured the wish they actually be the joint ticket. There was argument over who should be Prez and who should be VP based on idealogy though..LOL

I just don't think the memo is going to sell as the Libs wish. They'll try it, it won't be successful.
