AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch police arrested 12 passengers on a U.S. Northwest Airlines plane bound for India which was forced to turn back to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport on Wednesday, news agency ANP reported.
ANP quoted a police spokesman as saying 12 were arrested, but declined to give further details due to the ongoing investigation.
Police officials were not immediately available to comment.
The Dutch Defense Ministry said earlier the pilot decided to turn back after the crew said several of the 149 passengers on flight 42 to Mumbai were behaving suspiciously.
Security has been increased at airports worldwide in the last two weeks after British police said they had foiled a plot by British Muslims to blow up planes in the mid-Atlantic using liquid explosives disguised as drinks.
When my Navy ship was on station in the Persian Gulf in the early 1990s, my crew and I were awarded the Southwest Asia Service Medal. So referring to middle easterners as "south Asian" is not at all farfetched.
Here's a sound clip of Dutch ground control communications regarding the U.S. Northwest Airlines plane on approach to Schiphol/ Netherlands.

I've been on the AMS-DEL also.
They may be on earth, but they certainly are not citizens...
Considering they were talking about appearance, it may be hard to know their religion. Pakistanis and other South Asian Muslims are not Arabs, nor do they look like them.
That was neat, very interesting. Thanks for posting - I never know what goes on up there in the cockpit. I just get on, order a couple of drinks, go to sleep, and wake up wherever I planned to go...thank you, pilots!
LOL!
You are welcome. You hear ground control and the F-16 pilots, part of the communications from the F-16 pilots is in secure mode, according to the source. The Northwest 42 dumped kerosene over the IJsselmeer. The F-16s came from the airbase at Leeuwarden.
Was this recorded from a multi-frequency scanner? I seem to be hearing multiple controllers, which I didn't think they would normally do. (Of course, what has this to do with normal?)
There is, of course coded info, which is probably part of why the pilot was most comfortable returning to AMS. Some of the really short bursts went right by me. Do you know of a complete transcription anywhere yet?
Bedankt,
HF
That's probably why I have a couple of drinks when I get on (a trans-Atlantic flight). I put my eyeshades on, commend myself to God's mercy, and go to sleep...
"....arresting 12 passengers on one flight is a huge deal, imo."
It would seem so, unless you consider that Dutch Law is also used in Aruba, where we have seen countless "arrests".....so "arrest" (alone) really doesn't mean very much under Dutch law as compared to many countries. IIRC, Dutch law allows anyone to be arrested and held for up to 14 days minimum upon "suspicion" alone, no probable cause being necessary

"They were not paying attention to what the flight attendents were saying," an unnamed female passenger said on NOS television.
Hot-headed Catholic Nuns, no doubt.
I hope that the Dutch give these guys a proper punishment. Subject them all to the dreaded Dutch Oven.
yep. that is true.
LOL ala Hansel and Gretel!
Britain has many Pakistanis, becuase of their colonial history in India/Pakistan.
Cool! I am listening to it now.
Thanks, seems 12 people were arrested.
