Sure, but it should have a significance to Ares/Orion. They must have thought it out that far when they were brainstorming over the emblem.

I knew about the name years ago ..... but when I whispered it to my cat one day, NASA was forced to change it.

They should come up with something better than that. You know, something that captures the true spirit of the space program these days. I was thinking of the name "Titanic."

I guess this new venture will be called "The Orion Program" then? Since the command vehicles will be reusable, I would guess they'll have their own names. Maybe "Hermes" is still in the running.

If it is shaped a certain way, will it be called Genital Hermes?

They had to shorten that to LM, since the E stood for excursion and NASA didn't want anyone to get the idea that the lunar landing would be a vacation or picnic.

Really!  Interesting.    If people were that ignorant back then, it just affirms my feelings about the general masses today......

We've known for a couple weeks that it was to be called "Orion." And that's sad... there's only *one* spacecraft called Orion:

Since there's a history of naming US spacecraft after Greek gods and heros, how about "Hermes"?

Sounds contagious...

It was the beginning of PC. Or at the time of the beginning of PC. Don't want to offend anyone by making them think a lunar landing would be a cakewalk. Not sure how that idea would be offensive but NASA was already feeling the sensitivity thing.

If I had my choice we'd be naming these"

"John W. Campbell"
"Hugo Gernsback"
"Robert A. Heinlein"
"Issac Asimov"
"Poul Anderson"

That's a good start for the fleet...

So the name is Orion...I don't like it. Orion was a plan to build a spacecraft powered by setting off nukes under a big hemispherical plate. This just doesn't have the same panash.

But I love the comment "I guarantee you that sucker will move."

The best line in the book was when they launched.

God was knocking and he wanted in BAD!
