Police Investigate Two Suspicious Truck Drivers
POSTED: 2:21 pm EDT August 21, 2006
JEFFERSON COUNTY -- Could two suspicious truck drivers reported to police in Jefferson County have ties to terrorism?
Last night at about 11:30pm someone at the Travel Centers of America Truck Stop noticed something suspicious and reported it to police.
The police report says two unidentified men who appeared to be of Middle Eastern descent were operating a tractor trailer carrying an unknown radioactive material. The person reporting the incident says that the pair gave the travel center false registration information and a false vehicle identification number. The report goes on to say that the pair cut the lock that secured the trailer and entered the cargo area. They later replaced the lock with one that they bought inside the truck stop. The two then left the area immediately and headed west on Interstate 80.
The police are not saying anything more about the incident other than it is being investigated. Highway Patrol stopped the same men in Ohio. No word from them on whether anything suspicious was found.

Misleading title.
I thought it was another Kennedy-behind-the-wheel article.

The report is a bit thin. How did the person making the call know that the trailer was carrying an unknown radioactive material?
Geiger counter, scan portal, hazmat placard?

Just for the heck of it, can you tell us in which state this happened. Probably about half the states have a Jefferson County.

Now let's get back to providing benefits to 'sex workers' and putting forks in the base of the skull of babies. Where are you priorities, people?"

You got that right. I'm not far from Jefferson County in Tennessee, and it has a Truckstop of America near there.

and headed west on Interstate 80.So they did the truck stop thing in PA, and then headed west, and then were stopped in Ohio? Or were they stopped in Ohio before they got to PA?
I know there is no answer in the article because the reporting is hideous, but it would be nice to know.
I try not to be an alarmist, but this is not good.

Exactly. My guess is a hazmat placard which begs the question, what terrorist is going to drive around in a truck marked radioactive? This is going to amount to nothing.

At one of the places I worked, they shipped some sort of flammable goo in trucks. The trucks had flip-up hazmat placards, and it was fairly common for someone to flip the things to Radioactive Class II rather than Flammable, just for a lark.
OTOH, maybe the truck stop had a scanner installed by HS?
Just giving false ID for the truck is enough to launch an investigation, the radioactive part is sort of irrelevant unless you just like frightening people or blaming Bush for not keeping us all safe.
