Syphilis sive Morbus Gallicus [Girolamo Fracastoro, 1530]. Your buddy seems like a very old and terminally advanced case of French Disease. Hospice care is indicated.

He's gone native. He must be listening to jazz as well.

Soon, the radius of influence of the individual will be drastically reduced. Imagine that you ride a bike to do your shopping. Your looking at 30 minutes to go 7 miles. If its flat. And sunny. Forget carribean vacations, skiing etc. Forget open heart surgery, radiotherapy, expensive chemicals. He's really a scientist? Thankfully, he's in France.

FREEPER input would be greatly appreciated! When the blood runs in the streets, your friend will see the light. I have long predicted the first West versus Islam bloodbath will occur in France, when Frenchmen finally realize their imminent peril. You might cut him a little slack since he lives in Strasbourg, which has to be one of the world's most idyllic settings. A fool's paradise, in his case.

instead of thoughts - ask him for his OPINION and then his advice (and then never make him wrong) - use "feel - felt -found" if he is off kilter -

Forget open heart surgery, radiotherapy, expensive chemicals.Yeah, forget them, because health care is free, but they don't actually have those things.

Your franco-american friend is probably similar to many late 1930's francos who rationalized about Hitler. They convinced themselves that the threat was to others, or exaggerated. Your friend seems self servingly naive. It's much easier to delude oneself than to confront unspeakable horror.

In every immigration debate, the "conservatives" claim the new groups refused to learn the language, learn the culture, prone to crime and laziness. Just read a history book about the US during the Irish Migration, they said the exact same things about the Papists that you are saying about the Muslims.
History is on your friend's side.
Fuel will be the bigger shock, alternative forms of oil (bio, shale, tar sands) are only worth it when the price of Oil is above a certain price. The rest of the world's consumption of oil is increasing. Developing alternative fuels is a scientific problem first, then a business problem.

Just damn ... By any chance does he also say that Jerry Lewis is the best actor that ever lived?
There is a sure-fire test to see if he is no longer reachable ... ask him if he has seen the French Army rifles for sale on E-Bay. They are advertised as never fired and dropped once. If he does not laugh, I give you my deepest condolences for he is beyond redemption.

Here are some suggestions:
Look at the nations where Islam reigns. They are a return to the Sixth Century but armed now with AK-47s, MIGs, SCUD Missiles, and soon, Nuclear weapons, instead of scimitars. The cult of the Assassins who called themselves
fedayeen (trans. "one who is ready to sacrifice his/her life for a cause."), who were once limited to the lengths of their arms and the reach of their blades, are now able to project their force throughout any enclosed space with suicide bomb belts. The technology of death has given this cult of death far more power to deal death.
David, you wrote of the shrinking of our power... the limiting of our ability to project the individual's influence beyond a range of 50 miles, and that only through effort. Along with that is the fact that our interactions with those who wish to kill us will also be closer to home. Add in the above expansion of their power to deal death and we have a situation where this war will no longer be fought in Iraq, Iran, or even Madrid... but in the next block over.
You equate the Muslims and Sharia with Jews and Yarmulkes and Hindu's and turbans... but Sharia is not a garment; it is Islamic religious law that their beliefs requires to be universal... applied to you, and your wife and daughters, as well as to them. It's basic tenet is that ALL must bow to their god and to declare there is no god but Allah. If you refuse, under Sharia, you can legally be killed by any of the faithful.

Basically he is more worried about fuel than the Fascists! Is is resigned, and accepting, and have given up any hope to chance what he sees is the inevitable fate of Muslim supremacy.
I've noticed the same thing in a few Liberals I email argue with living here also.
It's the mark of cowardice. They seem to think that anything is better than fighting for our way of life. I believe it's because as liberals, they have succumbed to their own propaganda of hate America, and don't believe it's worth saving.

"I have to play it a little like I am swayed by his viewpoint or else it might not work..." This is not good. If something needs to be played it's untrue. It's weak and bears poor witness to the truth to make such arguments. Insulting to your friend as well as damaging to yourself and the "cause". It's what libs do. Yuck. you asked so don't get mad. you can call me stupid once but that's it. ps: my suggestions are not meant to imply that i live up to my own high standards, which of course i do not.

Not sure what that means. I love jazz, France, and French movies and wine.
That said, I also love Ronald Reagan, country music, capitalism, and the whole 9 conservative yards.

Tell him that his bride awaits him:
Turn-offs: military, frats, misogyny, patriots, capitalists, religion, pro-lifers, vainity, conservatives, ignorance, xenophobia, playas, social darwinism, warmongers, gender facists, people who hate fat women and other brands of general jerkoffs.

In one of her other pictures she has the nerve to stand in front of one of Gaudi's chapels and declare herself anti-religion. Yep, French.

Did you get this person's permission before posting his private email to a public forum? He is easily identifyable based off the details you provided and I don't think he would appreciate this. How would you feel if someone starts posting your private mails to a forum?
