WASHINGTON - The Senate's immigration proposal would cost $49 billion over the next five years and $127 billion over the next decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
The majority of the costs would be for increased enforcement, such as hiring more Border Patrol officers and building more detention facilities.
The legislation would offer a chance at citizenship for millions of immigrants. Spending on government benefits programs, including refundable tax credits for the working poor, would rise by $16 billion for the years 2007-11, and by $48 billion over the decade, the CBO said in a report released over the weekend.
Legalization of now illegal immigrants would increase spending on Social Security and Medicare benefits by $10.5 billion over the next 10 years, the CBO said. Eligibility by many of them for refundable earned income tax credits aimed at helping low-income families would cost another $24.5 billion.
The CBO forecast only modest increases in other popular benefit programs as a result of illegal immigrants and new guest workers acquiring legal status.
"We estimate that enrollment in child nutrition, Food Stamp and Medicaid programs ... would each be about 2 percent to 3 percent higher in 2016 than under current law," it said.

For months now people like Tancredo, Lou Dobbs, radio talk show hosts, Sensenbrenner, etc., have been warning us of the fiscal and cultural catastrophe that the Senate amnesty bill would bring us.
The only sensible bill is the House proposal and the Conference will not reach a final draft until after the election.
All FReepers should let their representatives know they support the House bill that calls for strict border enforcement FIRST.
The farmer eventually spoke and asked the people in the meeting if they would harvest onions for $3 an hour and did they have any idea about the cost that would be passed on to the consumer if the farmers didn't have cheap labor. I pointed out that I had not seen a significant decrease in the price of onions due to the cheap labor. If I was paying $1.00 for onions three years ago, $1.25 two years ago, and $1.50 today, then who is making a profit on cheap labor? It doesn't show in the price passed on to the consumer. If labor is so cheap, then the price of onions should be going down. None of us have seen any of this drastic reduction in cost, It hasn't been passed on to the consumer, even though we are continually fed the line that cheap labor is keeping our cost down.
The illegal immigration crap is nothing compared to LBJ's Great Society fiasco.
Consider that the avg. population of the U.S btwn 1967 and now is probably around 250 million people. Consider that we have spent in excess of 7 trillion dollars, (7 followed by 12 zeroes) trying to elevate people who don't want to be responsible citizens. This is costing each person, not just you the head of household, but each of your children in addition to you and your spouse about $600 per year, $50 per month. Got a family of four? $200 per month to support the dregs of society who are dealing drugs, killing and raping people when they go to town and showing up at the Unemployment office every week. Where does your paycheck go?

I don't have the reference handy but the number I remember was that less than 15% of illegals in this country were involved in agriculture...and if memory serves I believe the number was 13%.
people who promote the illegal immigration contribution to the agricultural economy seem to forget how we managed before they arrived.
I myself unloaded produce trucks & boxcars through high school and college. I just don't know how we managed without illegals. LMAO

Not exactly, the NG troops on the border have their M-16 with them, they have loaded mags in pouches, but not in the M-16. The BP is responsible for their protection, just as they are responsible for the safety of Border Watch groups, if they are notified the civilian group is on the Border.
