Back Bay neighbors draw a line on graffiti
Boston Globe ^ | August 21, 2006 | Maria Cramer

They strike at night. While Back Bay sleeps, the vandals creep around the parked Volvos, Audis, and Lexus sport utility vehicles and toward the elegant brick buildings. In white, black, and neon-green paint, they leave their mark in the alleyways. By morning, when dwellers of this historic neighborhood wake up and head to their cars, they find out who has been on their property. Zorg, Utah, and Des are the names of graffiti vandals whose very mention causes residents around Newbury Street and Commonwealth Avenue to shudder.

On Sept. 1, one of the neighborhood's biggest menaces -- Gonzo, whom police identified as Michael Beck, a 20-year-old Quincy car washer -- is scheduled to arrive in court for a pretrial hearing.

Back Bay residents, who have accused Beck of spray-painting at least 68 properties, said they will be ready with photographs of his alleged handiwork and letters to the judge from dozens of people who say they are his victims.

The quotes at the end of the article by "Caleb" are incredibly foolish even for someone with ties to Cambridge.

"Caleb Neelon, a Cambridge artist who was curator of a graffiti exhibit at the New Art Center in Newton in March, said that jailing taggers would not stop others from spraying graffiti."

Who says the point is to "stop other taggers"? It's crime and punishment, not crime and "make an example of to deter others".

Tagging a Back Bay wall is a way of inhabiting a neighborhood that is beyond the financial reach of many young people, Neelon said.

Actually, it's just plain old vandalism.

"tagging" is the same as a "haji-squat"

Some one needs to "tag" these guys with a baseball bat a few times and they'll stop that crap.

The reporter is an idiot. By actually naming the taggers, she just gave them exactly what they wanted- and inspired who knows how many others to try to attain that same immortality.

I was thinking that perhaps the final test for the US ARMY Sniper school should be that you got to nail one of these punks with a tranquilizer dart.

Think about it. You'd have to stake out a potential site, hide yourself, remain motionless for perhaps hours before getting a shot, and you'd have to make that shot count. Once you drop off your sleeping tagger to the cops and you get your diploma.

Having lived just up Comm Ave from there, I can tell you that the residents do not realize that they have brought this stuff on themselves.

Dear Tagger:

My property is not your canvas. Express yourself elsewhere, or I'll paint the street with your brains.

Thanks.

I have always hated graffiti "artists," and the PBS types who sponsor them by pretending that they are creative souls just yearning for self-expression.

I would sentence them to clean up graffitti by hand for a year, and no food until they accomplish each day's assignment. Then they can scrub the streets by hand. No TV, no other exercise.

I'd like to catch one of those little vandals, spank their face, give them a new hair do with spray paint, and send them crying home to mama.
