RIVERSIDE, N.J. -- Hundreds of protesters and counter-protesters assembled in this small Philadelphia suburb Sunday in response to the community's new attempt to crack down on illegal immigration.

About 200 protesters argued against a township ordinance adopted last month that bans the hiring and housing of people who cannot verify they are legal residents. A larger group massed across the street to support the new law.

People on both sides of the street waved American flags, but traded hostile remarks.

"This can only lead to more separation, more hostility, more hatred, more anger," Marlene Lao-Collins, associate director of the New Jersey Catholic Conference, told protesters. "As we have seen, this ordinance has already created hostility toward all immigrants, whether they are illegal or not."

Several cars drove past waving Confederate flags and shouting, "Go home!" while one person held up a sign that read, "We Are Home."

The ordinance punishes landlords and employers who house or hire illegal immigrants. Local officials estimate that as many as 3,500 illegal immigrants, many from Brazil, live in the town.

The ordinance is similar to one passed in July in Hazleton, Pa., and comes as other towns across the nation are considering such measures.

Both the Riverside and Hazleton ordinances have been challenged in federal court.

"This can only lead to more separation, more hostility, more hatred, more anger," Marlene Lao-Collins,

Wrongo Marlene darlin'.

It can also lead to folks who broke our laws to get here moving there law breaking backsides right back on to where ever it is they came from.

The press has an agenda - don't print the truth. We are actually living 'yellow journalism'. Bet current journalists think they invented deliberate lies and distortion.

Local officials estimate that as many as 3,500 illegal immigrants, many from Brazil, live in the town.

A quick search for Riverside, NJ showed a population of just under 8,000 in the 2000 census. So if that information is correct, then how can anyone palusibly argue that we are not being invaded? That's nearly half the population! Maybe someone with local knowledge of the area can help me out; I've never been down that way.

Anti-ordinance protester on TV tonight arguing "why should we hate people just because they don't have the right papers?" - the stupidity and/or deceitfulness of these people is breathtaking......

Now here is a real bit of twisted and biase reporting. Keep in mind, the largest group in attendance was the group that favors the illegal immigration control measures.

More accurate would be this....

BJUNGNAN PRESS

RIVERSIDE, N.J. -- Hundreds turned out to support a community's new attempt to crack down on illegal immigration in this small Philadelphia suburb.

About (500, 1000, 2000? they don't tell us) supporters marched to support an ordinance adopted last month that bans the hiring and housing of people who cannot verify they are legal residents. Only a small group of 200 people turned out to oppose the new law.

Real story should be local government enforces laws that the federal government won't. Real story should be small town in New Jersey is getting over-run by illegal aliens. Real story should be non-citizens have the gall to demand that they not have to obey the law or pay taxes.

Instead we get this from the mainstream media.

Yet it is only one town, and as you have mentioned, a small one at that. If an illegal moves to a settlement with population of one, then half of that place's population would be illegal, too.

However, illegal immigration should be stemmed, but the racist component of those against illegal immigration (a small component) should not be supported.

"About 200 protesters argued against a township ordinance adopted last month that bans the hiring and housing of people who cannot verify they are legal residents."

Some Americans are being required to provide birth certificates and photo identification as proof that they are legal residents in order to obtain a drivers license, as well as for voters registration and as they cast their ballots. So why not require the same for employment?

I think it's a great idea. Kudos to Riverside. Well done.

Never mind the "reporting," America and Americans have reached the tipping point. We're not going to tolerate the illegal immigration nonsense any longer.

Local TV has shown the protest of the illegals as being made up of Confederate flag toting, heavily tattooed young white men and overweight shrieking women all screaming hateful language. It looks like the conclusion you are supposed to draw is that the quiet peaceful illegals are being harrassed by white trash haters. I don't know the truth, I wasn't there but I suspect the media is coloring the protestors negatively since those types of people are an oddity in these parts.

Personally, I don't blame the illegals for doing what they have to do to take care of their families. The blame lies with our both R & D representatives who have failed to give us a mechanism to allow these folks to work here but be accounted for and the bad apples removed.

I've lived in heavily Hispanic communities in Chicago and Miami. The second generation always prefers English.

I am against Illegals of all stripes (even if they are pale and Canadian). Nevertheless, the only people who should be concerned about "losing the language" are any first generation immigrants who's children prefer English after a steady diet of television and hip-hop MP3 files.

Besides, Brazilians don't speak Spanish anyway.
